Lead

I am trying to find some lead weight to put in my boat. I want to be able to move it around at any time. I tried my local tire shops but none of them will sell me used tire weights. I dont want to spend alot of money on pop bags either. Does anyone have any suggestions or know of anywhere I could score some lead. I live in Cleveland,TN which is just north of Chattanooga and about 45 minutes from Knoxville.

That kind of surprises me. They are required to save & dispose of the lead properly. Maybe that is getting more strict now.
I've had a couple of shops willingly give it to us without a problem.

Some of the chain tire shops are on a buy back program from their battery suppliers for the lead. Try the little ones that is where I got mine from.

Reloading Lead from a gun shop/ bass pro/cabelas gander mtn, etc.. although lead prices have been VERY high lately.

Try craigslist.

I was able to get all the lead I could carry out from an indoor shooting range.

I did not think about shooting ranges. When I talked to the tire shops most told me they had a guy they sold the lead to and wouldn't sell it to anyone else. One shop told me they would sell it to me for $1 a pound after they melt it and form bricks,,which they sell to race people. And a few said they melted it down and re-used it. Kind of aggrevating.

there is a company out there that makes lead sacks with handles that makes it easy to move. it also comes in 400lbs and 700lbs orderers. ask the CIE Crew. they had lead in the bonecrusher.

Pop bags aren't lead.

Lead is considered haz waste now in most states.

It's illegal for tire shops to give haz waste away.

Tire shops are required to use certified haz waste removal, log accumulation, and store haz waste manifests. If they don't comply they risk huge fines.

The days of using lead as ballast are quickly coming to an end boys.

Well what are poor folks supposed to do about adding moveable ballast to there wake boats?

Go talk to a steel supplier. I bought some blocks off a customer of mine. I just got 2 more from him. They same size as a brick of photocopy paper and weigh approx 60lbs each if not more. I had a buddy weld a handle on them and got them Rhino lined so they don't scratch my boat.

80lbs of sand fits in a 5gallon container too. 105lbs of concrete. That is as cheap as it gets. We have 3 5gall gas cans on each side of the motor with concrete fits great next to stock ballast can. That is less then $.03 a lb and won't scratch or rust

what do you put the lead in when ur melting it? cast iron pot?

I use bread pans or sbc valve covers.

We cast the bricks in wood molds made out of scrap 2x6 lumber.
And melted the lead in large soup/juice cans. I think any old pot would do fine as lead's melting temp is pretty low.

I like the sbc valve covers idea...... makes you wonder what other funny ideas you could dream up.

O sorry i thought you meant after it was melted. Yes i use a large pot, its not even cast iron.

I went to the grocery store and bought those cheap 2.50 bread pans and just used them to heat up and mold.

What you need to do and this is what pop-products did is find any company that manufacturers products that are metal and the have plasma cutting tables or drill presses. Where I work the tables run all day cutting metal and all the small pieces that are left over from a sheet fall through the table. At the end of each day there is tons of weight. You just need to be standing there with a bucket.

It seems like I can't get enough weight. in the winter I need it for my tractor in the summer I need it for my boat. Now does someone know where to get some bags or carry devices like what pop products?

The metal recyclers are not going to be as cheap as you may think. They buy it from our company for like 37.5 cents a pound or whatever ever the current price of scrap metal is worth.

Not real sure, every recycler is different. The cheapest I have seen was 1.05 per pound.
