go back to the basics first. start with grabs only. make them feel good to you. then add 180's. then do them with 3's and keep ovin up. it all start with a solid foundation. its deffinately not easy. but in the long run you will benefit greatly from it.

grabs arent the only thing that make tricks stylish. clean, smooth, tweaks. all of those things come into play.

Also, little things like handle position make a big different for me. Practice keeping the handle low, at your knee when you grab. Keep the handle horitontal or parallel to the water.

I hear you trent, I'm working on grabbing my inverts and it is so hard!

Like Jason said, style is not only in grabs, but in tweaks and pokes as well. Going large and keeping in control, landing smooth/solid counts too!
This season was actually the first year I could watch myself on video and not be completely embarrassed because I spent a lot of time the past 2 seasons working on the little things.

Get DS2 and watch D Cook's section, that kid brings it.

Yes, I agree with Randy, Derek Cook's section is actually what motivated/inspired me this spring!

If I picked up DS 2 and wanted to learn style by osmosis, I personally (and it's all personal preference) would chose to watch Josh Smith's section (though lots of repeated tricks), Josh Storrer's section, and Mike Schwene's (sp?) section. Smooth and grabbed and technical.

As for the original question, I have learned very few tricks in the past couple years but have focused a lot on grabbing, bigger, etc. For me, grabbing a trick = a whole new trick so it often takes a long time to learn. Just have to keep trying as it's a fun way to progress...

Personally I don't believe that grabs equal instant style.

Try this:
Find the most distinct part of your riding. It may be you ability to grab, how big you go, how smooth you land or how well you ride your board and accentuate it.

There are several paths to style. Just because you have trouble grabbing doesn't mean that you don't have style. What do you do well?

To me, style has nothing to do with the hat you wear--it's how you wear it.

the best thing i do is all my inverts....i can take all of them way out in the flats or i can land right on the slope of the wake...all depends how i feel right before i make my edge....all my spins are w2w cuz i just cant land them in the flats....i just really wanna make my inverts look good by grabbing but i just can't do it....guess i just suck at life haha

Yes, back 5's are cool, but fashion airs to blind are better. Hopefully, you'll see both this weekend, sperbet, with a little tootsie roll from the Captain thrown in for good measure.

hey man...style's style as long as your havin a good time out there, your "style" will show out. just do what feels good with each trick. My philosophy anyway

as long as it gets chicks its good!

Hahahahah

As for grabbing inverts do what J-rod said, handle in low and tight will really help you get the grab, also a lot of the time you can start to reach for the grab right as you leave the wake before you have even left the water.

Look at the pics.

Can any body tell from the take-offs what tricks I am about to trow? They are both very different, you can tell by how my feet are weighted.

BCH nailed it, fist pic is an indy back 3 melon. the second is a nose back roll.

And of course Colin is doing a massive hoochie to blind.
