today when I was riding I came down weird on my leg after a raley....I landed with my legs stiff and felt pain on the outside of my left knee, as the day progressed the pain went away, but when i jumped off the boat when we were docking my leg just gave way, i've been trying to walk around on it some and it seems that when i walk up stairs or put alot of pressure on it thats where I feel pain...so far it hasnt swollen up, so I have no clue what might be wrong with it...I dont think its my acl, has anyone had this problem before?

could be a small tear of an LCL, but I'm no doctor. If pain persists, I would suggest go seeing one before something worse happens

If it gave way I would bank on ACL, that is what really holds the knee together, with out it you have no real stability. How is it going down stairs? If you are completely solid going down stairs I am wrong, but if you feel unstable going down stairs I would throw most my $ on ACL (having blown 2). I did my second wakeboarding and thought it was just a sprain, then I was walking down stairs and it just gave way, that was when I knew what I had really done. One way to check is get someone you trust, you lie on your back with both legs streched out and relaxed, have the person put one hand on top of your upper leg (just above the knee) and the other hand on the back of your lower leg (below the knee) and try and move the lower up in the air holding the upper leg down (you stay relaxed). This is a gentle motion as to NOT incurr any further injury. Have them do that to both legs, with a general ACL tear there is a noticable difference in resistance. My dad had watched my doctor do that same thing on my first, and after my second giving way I had my old man try it and he felt a difference instantly, which was bad news! This however is only for your knowlege as whatever this tells you, you should still go see a specialist!

yeah gavin is right on the test, if you have an ACL your knee joint should stop the 2 parts of your legs it should like "catch" if you dont have one, you should feel it shifing around.

hey guys thanks for all the input...I went to the doctor today and it turned out to be torn cartilage...he told me the only thing i can really do for it right now is give it plenty of rest and Ice, and wear a knee brace. I go back here in two weeks so he can check it out and see how things are going. He mentioned something about scope surgery to remove some of the damaged cartilage...i'm not familiar with any of this and quite frankly it sucks that this is probably gonna ruin alot of my summer. Have any of ya'll dealt with this and how long was it before you were wakeboarding again?

you tore your meniscus most likely.

if he scoopes it it will not ruin your summer, the meniscus surgery is so much better than an ACL.

what they do it make 2 small "pen" sized holes in your knee, go in there and clean it up. you'll be walking the next day, working in 2-3 days afterwards and you can do everything you could do before the injury in about a month.

Phil,
Depends on if they remove the torn part of the meniscus or repair it. Your recovery time will be much slower if it is repaired. I had mine repaired in mid- April and I was on crutches for 5 weeks. Just now starting weight training and finally building my muscle back up.

Get an MRI. Only way to tell. Austin has had 3 scopes including one last Weds. He is riding this weekend (maybe)in MN. About a 2 -4 week recovery from surgery. You can't damage it after surgery it just takes it a few days for the body to rcup from the intrusion.

I tore cartilage in my left knee many years ago and had about 3" of it removed (surgery, not scoped). Then it was scoped several years later to clean out some stuff. If they let you do a local, it's actually pretty cool to watch! My heal time was pretty quick after the scope. I'm actually having the same problem with my right knee now - it collapses after I ski when I'm trying to go up/down stairs and I have to hang onto the rail, but then later in the day it's better. Pretty sure it's cartilage again, but I haven't been to the doc.
