Impeller Missing 4 Teeth

I was changing my impeller on my 2003 Natique and discovered 4 of the teeth have disintegrated. Luckily, it's running fine but do I need to go through the system looking for the missing rubber? Is there any chance those parts passed through?

I would take the raw water hoses off and try to find the pieces! I had this happen to my 2002 SANTE 210 a few years ago and I ended up finding pieces of the old impeller in the thermostat housing. Now, I always change my impeller every 50 hours before it fails, as it is only a $35.00 part.

Sounds like good advice. I normally change mine at he beginning of every season but missed last one for some reason, so now I'll have to pay the piper. Thanks.

I'm curious, how many hours before it failed. I do mine every 50 also. It's not worth having to chase pieces to stop the overheating.

I'd say I had at least 110 on mine, but that's just a guess. I normally change mine at the beginning of every season, but last year I missed, so it has been in there for two years. I knew better.

Took the intake hoses off and can find no traces of rubber. Could they have gone through?

Interesting. I just changed one out on a friends 07 Sanger with 300 hrs and it was in perfect condition.

I think there are a lot of variables. How long did it sit,How many dry starts,How dirty the water is that it runs in(debris) etc.

Yep those variables do play into the lifespan. I was thinking the same thing. Through the winter I bump my engine over for a second or two a few times a month just to reposition things...pistons, valves, valve springs, camshaft, impeller...

I can't figure this one out either. No dry starts and I wakeboard some during the winter. Could I have put it in wrong?

Might have sucked some debris up from the water. How did the rest of it look. Was it dry rotted or did it look and feel normal other than the missing pieces?

The rest felt normal. We did have a lot of rain last year which causes debris to float. Maybe it was a defective part?

Keep tearing the system apart until you either find them or make sure they are absolutly not in the system somewhere. You will regret not doing it if you have a problem later. I had to pick mine out of the heat exchanger in one boat and I have seen them make it into the exhaust risers and get stuck before. Look at it this way, you don't know at what hour the impeller failed. It could have been at hour 1 or 109. If it failed at hour 1, that means the pieces could have been worn down to nothing and passed through the system by now. On the other hand, it could have failed at hour 109 and the pieces are still in there just waiting for you to get on the lake before they clog the cooling system and overheat the engine.

IMO check the transmission cooler first, and then the thermostat. If it's small enough to get through those, it should be able to clear the rest of the system and is on the bottom of the lake somewhere. Although it's not a bad idea to pull your exhaust risers off about every 5 yrs anyway to check for them for rust-through.

I called the PCM technicians and they said to take all of the hoses off running past the impeller. I checked everywhere for rubber but found none. I then called the technician back and he said the rubber had passed and I should be okay. Ironically, the transmission cooler is on the input side. It's strange that no filter is placed after the impeller. Oh well, I should be ready for the weekend and I'll always change impellers in March when we first start wakeboarding consistently.

As common as this is you would think there would be a screen of some sort to catch a failed impeller.
