towing with rims

i have a 2003 chevy avalanche and a tige 24v

i have been getting some new rims for the truck, i was thinking 22' but i wasnt sure if i would be able to tow the boat

Is it possible? if not would it work with 20'

The rims arent the issue the tires are. You can have 37" mudterrains on a 20" rim or you can have super low profile tires on the same rims. One can tow a 10,000 lb toyhauler, one would be sketchy pulling an 18ft boat. You can roll 20's (I do) or even 22's as long as you get a higher profile tire.

Try to stay away from the flats.. Although rims don't look as good without them

I have 22's (came with the truck)on my Yukon and tow a 22'Centurion Avalanche that is about 5,700lbs or so (with batteries). As mentioned above, you can do it no problem, but you definitely sacrifice comfort. The lower profile tires just don't absorb much and you feel every bump, so you need to be a bit more careful. I don't tow that often, or I would probably go back to stock rims just to be more comfortable. FYI my tires are 305/40/22

I haven an '03 Avalanche with 20's and 305/50/20 Toyo Open Country and I tow an '07 Tige RZ2 with no issues. My trailer has 20's on it too, 275/40/20's on Goodyear Eagle GT II's (I think). No issues!

Not sure I would go to a 22 or not, 20's are heavy enough!

Tires? Rim Size?? It's about gearing and load ratings, not tires and rims.

Towed with both 20's and 22's with NO problems on our Yukon XL. Currently towing with 20's on our E350 van with no problems. I would run 22's on the avalanche or don't bother. Just my .02

If the new escalade's can tow with them it shouldn't be a problem for you.

07 gmc ukon with 24"s no problem. i tow a mastercraft 06 x2

Centrifugal forces are at work...yes it will affect it, braking will suffer (May show up as heat), along with fuel economy.

I changed the rolling diameter/width on my commuter car and took a 7 mpg hit.

I went from getting 19 mpg on the highway with the stock tires to a max of 16 mpg but my low end non-towing mpg is still at 14~15 which boggles my mind (those are corrected for the taller tire too). Braking doesn't seem to be too big of an issue and my I replaced my brake pads for the first time at 70,000 miles (both front and rear).

Kevin on those 03 and older Chev/GMC"S there was an issue with the steering box and anything over 20's on them. I have a Denali from that year and went with 20's to not only retain the originol ride quality but to hopefully not realize the steering box issue. I use to sell those and we saw it time and again in the service department. Obviously, it didin't happen everytime but it was consistent enough to warrant concern.

Hate N Pain- What exactly happens to the steering box? Just wondering so I know if I should be looking for something in particular.

FWIW-I have 22's on an '01 Yukon and have had no problems towing my 21V and Tandem Axle anywhere.

Kevin - I have the brushed "Speed Grille" from Stylin Concepts and a brushed bowtie as well. One thing that sucks about it is you have to relocate your hood release which I put behind the drivers side towhook hole.

Don't go by ppl saying "i don't hav eproblems"

Check the wt rating of your stock tires vs the ones you want. That is the right way to do it!

NAW, at first it feels loose, sort of shaky when you drive after a short period it just fails. You'll feel it along the steering shaft. Again, it doesn't happen with all vehicles but it did happen on a fairly regular basis.
