Besides the obvious, "we put birds on boards because birds fly and so do people who ride these", does anyone have a guess or explanation as to the prevalence of a certain style of eagle which occurs on various companies' boards?

The first one is a Griffin isn't it? Both are pretty sick graphics.

i thought those birds were supposed to represent a pheonix. If you go to this wikipedia article:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phoenix_%28mythology%29

You will see that the pheonix on the coin looks very similar to the bird on the drive and somewhat similar to the bird on the witness. The whole rising from the ashes bit has been used in board sports quite a bit.

Thanks for the info (I will always think "rising from the ashes" when riding my Witness) and now (in my best Napoleon 'geez' voice): discuss whether it is a griffin or a phoenix.

Take a look at all the screen print T's and clothing this year too, it's just the latest design fad, like tribal was a few years back.

Full circle from circa 1985, as evidenced by Jesse's post ;) I feel like Frank the Tank lookin at that sucker :P

Integrity Wake started using this as a logo in 04', since then there have been quite a few decks with a very similar graphic and a boat or two
