Got an update from the Habitat exec director - since the article ran PG&E called with a $10,000 donation to cover the stolen appliances, and Whirlpool stated it would replace the appliances free of charge. Another generous donor offered $5,000 to support the effort, and finally a volunteer just drove down to the construction site and wrote a check for $15,000--anonymously.
Staff "communicated with all donors to let them know that we have been oversubscribed for support but that we can still utilize their contributions to cover additional appliances in other homes, to repair the damage to the premises, to cover staff time in handling this situation and to make certain that we continue to make our homes safe, secure and sustainable for the future homeowners. We offer them all the opportunity to hold onto their donations if they so choose. No one has taken us up on that opportunity yet."
Good stuff.
