Hey all, I recently watched "the book" base inverts and in the backroll section, it shows kyle using the load and release to do a surface halfcab and suggest learning this first before using the wake for a backroll. It doesn't go into much detail however on how to do it other that loading and releasing the line.

Please help me out giving any and all tips to learn a surface backroll and/or a surface half cab.

I know he might say that on the DVD, but I really don't think you want to learn an air roll before you learn a backroll off the wake...if I'm understanding correctly that you don't do them. Yes, it is a tool for learning good technique but you're just going to get very frustrated to learn them like that.

You could try and a few to get the feel of the thing if that is less intimidating for you than hitting the wake, but air tricks are very difficult for most people.

Eubanks it may be true that they are harder but even so, I know how to do a backroll, there are endless post and videos on how to do one.

I don't know how to do a surface backroll/halfcab, and that is the purpose of this post. Not to learn how to do a wake to wake backroll.

Please someone help me out

a good step toward getting the air rolls is by doing it on that starting roller when ur boat first goes. cuz it is fairly similar to doing it in the flats.. but you can have more time to throw it until you can get comfortable enough to do it in the flats.

Hey Chris-I went for a lesson with kyle last summer and I tried a few air rolls. They dont hurt much but I can tell ya I couldnt see landing one.It did make me understand the load and release though. Before I took the lesson I was cutting in and hucking the flip, coming close but each flip was different. I went out yesterday and threw about 7 air rolls like Kyle showed me and every one was the same force. No injury and crashed every time. He told me to then do it one wake at my lesson but I was too shot to try after an hour of 360's and then the air rolls. Tomorrow if the water is good I will take it to the wake. I'm excited cause I was landing with the board at least out in front of me with no wake.
Slow the boat to 16-18 MPH. Cut out heel side and with straight legs , lean against the pull of the boat and bounce.Just like Kyle does in The Book. The boat should rock if you are doing it right. Its a real fast flip in the flats. Really dig that edge in but dont bend your knees. And from that back position( Keep the handle in) turn your head to the sky while you let the board fly out away from the boat behind you. Keep the handle as close to your body as you can. You board will fly around and the force is sick. You really dont do much but let it happen. Its nothing like hucking it.You do not throw this flip it throws itself if you load it right. Then you'll probabbly catch the nose of your board and crash as it comes around but you are only going 16MPH with not much cross pull. But from what I hear this is the technique!!! Now at the wake Kyle said its more of a load and hold through the flip than load and quick release like out in the flats. Please if anyone can add to this rambling please help me.Do I finally have the technique down after 3 years of failed attempts. And should I load at the wake as much as I load out in the flats? In videos pros dont look like they are loading like out in the flats doing an air roll.*Do I release at the very top of the wake or as the board is riding up the wake??????
