California Diesel truck exhaust laws (?)

I know that this has been covered in the past, but someone refresh my aging memory. My truck is an '06 6.0 powerstroke.(no bashing please). I want to put a 4" turbo back exhaust on it. No Cat, no muffler. Just a straight pipe from the turbo.
i stopped at one place, and he said that if your caught, it's a $10,000 fine to both him as installer, and me as owner to install an "Off road only" system on a street truck.
Is this true, or was he just bagging out of a job?

There's all kinds of trucks running around with exhaust mods. Where did you have them done? Or do I need to buy an exhaust on line, and install myself?

As far as i know you can't mess with any exhaust on any vehicle that's driven on california roads. I went through this on mine and now they've 100% implemented it for motorcycles as well. I wanted the same type setup on my truck and none of the installers in town will do it as they've busted a few and fined 'em big time.

I got the truck and it was like that! I never even look at it before. Im sorry I will put one on right away. Get a cat the you can bolt on. Get it signed of than the cat comes off. Thats what im goin to do if I get hit for no cat!

The only thing is the cat, get a high flow cat on there and you will never know the difference performance wise and you'll be legal.

On mine, I cut out the cat, hollowed it out by breaking the inside honey comb into tiny pieces. Then welded a straight pipe inside it so the exhaust was not disrupted by the huge chamber. Then I put a straight through borla diesel muffler. I have been very happy with it.

You have to be sneaky about it for sure. Big fine if caught.

I suppose you are hucking your warranty in the trash as well??

nu bu is right, you'll never even know the diff with a high flow cat, they are small and don't obstruct flow. If caught it's a real hassle.

It's starting to sound like I should just leave it alone.

Warrenty... god I wish I had one of those! Mine was a 1999 with 150k on it so warrenty was out of the question. I am pretty sure though, that an exhaust would not void a warrenty. A manufacturer has to prove that the product you installed was the cause for the failure. With Toyota, adding an exhaust system will only void the warrenty of the stock exhaust system and the other related components (cats, O2 sensors, etc).

It is a Federal Law to tamper with any emission control device.

In Nevada we emission test any diesel up to 10,000 lbs based on GVWR. Part of that test is a visual inspection. So if your state doesn't test which Cali. does not you won't have any problems unless you move or sell it, that being said alot if shops just won't take the chance like stated above.

Go to Minute Muffler in Dublin. He will do it. He just did mine on my 06 cummins.

It will void the warrenty if the cat and muffler are eliminated. If you install a hp exhaust that doesn't eliminate those then it won't.

Please keep shop names that might be doing work that might not be California compliant to PM's. Scotty is a friend of mine and I doubt he wants that kind of reputation. Not trying to bust balls, just dont want to see any shop get busted.

I am sure the work he did was for an offroad only race vehicle that is not driven on the street...

That is the truth, and with a 6.0L that is known to fail, not something I would touch until it was off warranty. If you do not care about the warranty...then go for it!

I believe they are going to start smogging the newer diesels in the state of CA.

I think it is from 2003 and newer. Im running no cat on my deisel but alot of the newer trucks have cats and even very expensive particulate filters in the exhaust themself.

Not sure on the 06 duramax. If you wanna do it yourself i can set u up with an MBRP exhaust system they make great bolt in systems in alumnized all the way up to 304 stainless.

Andy, I thought it was 07' and up for the smog testing??

I bought an 06 just for that reason pretty much.

well that, and it was cheaper than the same exact truck in an 07 sitting next to it.

all diesel trucks as of jan. 1st 2007 have to be smogged which means u don't have to worry about it get a b&m turbo with the 4" like u want and straight pipe away it's gonna be loud as hell and dump smoke when u punch it but it will be fine when ur just cruising and u'll notice the power difference oh and get the mbrp exhaust it's the best too. imo

scott, what is the details with smogg? I have not had to smog my 00 dodge. nor have i gotten anything from the state saying otherwise?

if 2000 dogde is wut u meant? yes that's right it isn't required to pass smog it's all trucks manufactured after jan.1st 2007 have to be smogged.

I'm not sure where you guy are all from, but here in Central Ca exhaust mods are all too common. I know several shops that will do whatever you want to it... I really don't think it is against the law to put aftermarket exhaust on a truck as long as it stays within emmsions standards which for earlier diesels is actually non-existant. For the 06 powerstroke, I'm not sure what those emissions are..I know I have an 01 Dodge with slight mods and straight piped 5" exhaust and have never had any problems. I have been pulled over for other things, and never once has the cop said anything about the exhaust (except how good it sounded and the excessive amount of smoke coming out of it)

You do not have to smog a diesel in CA. Well you might now '07 & up. But, I bought an 04 Cummins last year on E-bay from Texas. No cat, no muffler, straight piped. Pulled in to DMV inspection (cause it was from out of state)loud as hell. Signed me off & I was on my way.

yes on the 06 and older anything is fine and no it just has to pass a normal smog test
