Tomorrow looks like it will be the first warm day here in west texas. I only have a 3/2 shortie and a liquid force radium to go over that. Do you think I will be O.K.? Sounds cold to me, but friends say it won't be that bad, what do you think?

Depends on your balls, and how much you wanna do it. If it were me, i would go any chance I get.

sounds a bit too cold for me with your gear.

Here in norcal, the water has been 56 with 70s for the air. I have a 3/2 full, and 50 is about it's limit for me. You might want to see how much a full suit will set you back. Mine was only 110$ new.

Mike ~~ Is there really any question about that. We usually start our riding when the air is about 50 and so is the water. I usually do it in a spring suit, and yes it does suck and I only do two sessions. I hope this year I might be able to buy a drysuit to start the season even earlier. From Utah, Go for it!

If you get in and your sack sucks up into your throat and you don't pass out, you're good. . Sounds like balmy weather too me.

is the sun out? it was like 70 degrees for the air and about 50 for the water when we took our last rides. We wore shorties and it wasn't tooo bad.
Old     (garret_s)      Join Date: Apr 2006       02-18-2007, 7:23 PM Reply
50 deg water is pretty chilly. With a suit though, it shouldn't be any big problem, we did 55 air and 50 water last year, and no big issues.
Old     (rson)      Join Date: Jun 2002       02-18-2007, 7:32 PM Reply
No it passes the 100 degree rule.

70+50=120 I'd trunk it.

make friends with a wetsuit.

if we can ride 40/40 in a dry suit, you can take off your skirt and ride in the tropics, biznatch.

We've been going out pretty much all winter here in Austin. Yesterday was 66 and Sunny....water temp was 52-54 on Lake Austin. Some of us wore dry suits...some wore shorties. We all had a good time!

Haha, I like the responses to this thread. I guess it depends on where you are from. I've had it snow on me before while riding (actually it was 2 days before I took this pic), and I know lots of guys that go out when it's practically still winter. We ride with wetsuits, which does kinda seem like cheating. Anyway, that's enough of my two cents.

(Oh, the thermometer says 40, with a water temp of ~35-40)

Ben - I'm with ya. I'd go out there if the water was 40 degress if I got the chance! But 70 degree air and 50 degree water?! This time of year that feels like summer where I'm at! It was close to 65 or 70 degrees on saturday and I wanted to get out on the water more than anything. But instead I had softball practice..

Never would I pass on those conditions this time of year.

Here it is. Water was 49 air 70 the pictures blow, they are off a digital camcorder. Sorry about the quality. Everyone was right. The water was plenty warm around the core. The toes and fingers took a beating, but the core remained warm. Thanks for the advice.

F that. Wakeboarding is a summer sport, I like to be out in my bathing suit with no shirt, not a westuit.

<yawn>

I used to be able to live by the 100 degree rule, but those days are past. I was in high school and had quite a few friends that would all head out and we fed off of each other. I have some old pics of us starting off from shore, snowboarding on our wakeboards into the water. We would bonk/jib large pieces of floating ice. True North Dakotan blood. I don't have a crew anymore, so I just wait now, that and I don't think my bones will take it anymore.

Greg,

Were you riding Town Lake? Usually it is super cold from what I remember, at least everytime I have rode in it it was cold.
Old     (texastbird)      Join Date: May 2003       02-26-2007, 5:22 PM Reply
Dude, he says Lake Austin. There were no boats allowed on Town Lake except for special tournaments when I lived there. Town Lake is enerally shallow and pretty warm, too. Lake Austin is the cold water - esp way up below Mansfield Dam.

That 60 deg water sounds awesome! I was riding Lewisville Lake yesterday, and was happy to see that it had warmed up to about 50 deg. Still felt awesome with mid-60's air, sunshine and calm winds. I love winter butter!!!

Dan is correct, But maybe some day we can change the face of wakeboarding and have a Pro Tour stop on Town Lake that would be sick

Suck it up and Ride :-)

Last year I trunked it in 72 air and probably low 60's water. Wasn't too bad but this year I'm getting a shorty suit to start in early April vs. early May.

My bad, I guess I am thinking of Lake Austin. We usually come down for waketoberfest and stay at emma long park. Anyway, super cold compared to surrounding lakes.

I guess we have it made down here in LA (lower Alabama), I live just north of Destin Florida and the coldest our water temps get in the winter are mid to upper 50's.

Two days ago we had afternoon air temps in the lower 80's.

I still havent put the boat in the water since September....
