For me having the spare mounted low or under the trailer never worked. The bolts and the wheel get rusted no mater how I took care of them. Now I just toss the spare in the truck for long trips.
I think a high mount off the hitch tucked under the bow would be best as it wouldn't catch and hold water like the under mounts do.

I have mine mounted with a bracket up near the tongue just under the bow of the boat. You can find brackets at west Marine or any other marine shop or online.

JTW does the boat hit spare tire when you bring it in on to the trailer?

you can also call your trailer manufacturer. I got one for my traielr directly from boatmate, tire/rim and mounting..wanna say it was around $140 shipped to the door.

On my last boat I had the spare tire mount that clamped to the trailer frame up by the bow. It held the tire very nicely but if the launch ramp was steep it was possible for the boat to hit the tire as you loaded it, which left black marks on the hull. Tire was also in the way for washing/waxing.

On my current setup I have a spare tire carrier in the back, underneath the trailer, tucked in between the prop guard and the fender step. That definately puts the tire out of harms way and there is no way for the boat to bump it. The only downside is that the lock gets dunked everytime I launch which makes me worry that it won't work when I need it to. I operate the lock every month or so to keep it working.
