We aren't asking about passing a law that requires you to ask someone purchasing a gun "Do you have mental health issues?" that would be stupid.

We want mental health professionals, police, teachers, and family to be able to go to the cops and say "This dude shouldn't have a gun" then the cops can take away their gun, and the guy can prove he's not nuts before getting it back.
Seems reasonable.

Your right I know jack about guns ,,,BUT

How does a person register a firearm or remove a name from a firearms registration?
Only those firearms subject to the National Firearms Act (NFA) (e.g., machineguns, short–barreled rifles and shotguns, silencers, destructive devices, and firearms designated as “any other weapons”) must be registered with ATF.

Firearms registration may be required by State or local law. Any person considering acquiring a firearm should contact his or her State Attorney General’s Office to inquire about the laws and possible State or local restrictions.

I agree, then one idiot in Florida wouldn't have had the stones to walk into a school and start shooting people.

Hmm, I don't like you so I'm going to report you as nuts to the cops. You will then have to wait, and likely pay for the evaluations to clear your name. Going through a divorce? Say bye to your guns. Heck, if I want to rob you or rape your wife I will report you a week before. Except for the tough guy with a baseball bat, I'm pretty sure he is invincible toting that slugger.

I think crazy people shouldn't drive a car either, way too dangerous. Let's take those away on someone's word also.

What happened to innocent until proven guilty?

Make it a crime to report someone without cause. They have to buy you a brand new set of guns! Now everyone is happy.

So it's like a see something, say something sort of deal? How do you know who has guns and who doesn't??

Sounds like a bunch of he-said, she-said BS to me. With already limited resources for police and teachers, they're now supposed to be vigilantes and "report" people who may or may not have a gun.

brilliant. said no one.

Teachers and cops are already supposed to be watching out for people that are a danger to themselves or others. Lets just give them some teeth. As far as knowing who has a gun, I've never met a discreet gun nut. The bumperstickers and t-shirts are usually a give away.

No stickers, no hats, no shirts, no sweatshirts with any gun stuff. Not even a Rebel Flag. You can bet that I'm carrying concealed right now though and have a closet full at home.

Once again, showing how ignorant you really are with the whole gun thing.

He’s on to something, I also want a new “set” of guns.
Maybe something with matching blueing, some custom etching, exotic woods .....a compact frame carry piece, a 1911, a tricked out semi or pump 12ga, maybe something on an AR platform, and a bolt action long ranger. Would be a cool set to have.

You only get a set of guns if you prove the guy lied about your sanity. So, You get "a set" of dueling pistols and a face slapping glove to complete the deal.

Nice Raptor!

Nice FDE Glock. Here is Anti gun Ca. We have a hard time even getting colord guns. This is how stupid our laws are. Example each handgun that has a DIFFRENT part number need to be drop tested. Example a black Glock has a diffrent part number then a FDE Glock. So Glock would have to pay Thousands to have each one of its diffrent colored guns “drop tested”. At a cost of $30-$50k each, many firearm makers simply say NO THANKS Ca you guys can have black & black only. It’s not a deal killer. Frankly all I care is when I pull the trigger the gun go’s bang! Colors are great but just keeping it real.

Better than ONE guy with a gun pointing at everyone without one?

And nice perception of what a liberal thinks a gun owner looks like. I am a C level executive at a $3billion company and wear a suit everyday.

That is the problem. Liberals paint the picture of gun owners being the trigger happy gun slinger that's out committing gun related crime.
Old     (95sn)      Join Date: Sep 2005       03-26-2018, 6:54 PM Reply
Correct, that is part of the problem.
Gun owners think that those that want to have better/stronger gun laws think that "they" want to take ALL my guns away. Thats not true either.
There is no improvement if each side comes in with negative pre conceived opinions of the other guy.
Best to realize that the above is a cartoon, they overemphasizes stuff to make humor. Dont take it personal. Its not IMO.

Let me ask you, which guns do they want to take away, and which will we be "allowed" to keep?

The libs and the GOPers need to meet in the middle. Stronger enforcement of the current laws, harder background checks and longer wait periods. Doing so will get something done that most level headed people can get behind.

Good with stronger enforcement.

What would a harder background check look like?

Against "longer wait periods" but don't really know what it means. I can walk into a store with money and walk out with a gun.l today. There are no wait periods.

I thought there were waiting periods to buy guns. I have not purchased a gun without a CC (no waiting periods with it). I thought there used to be/was. If there isn't, there should be at least a week.

Background checks? I don't know, maybe dive into peoples medical history a bit. Hopefully they already do criminal checks.

holding period: depends on your background report. If it's a gray area or they confuse you someone else, the gun(s) will be held by FFL until they're cleared to transfer. I had an AK47 shipped to local FFL. (cool underfold with black synthetic stock) they initially wanted to hold it for a week, then called back that afternoon and said come get it.

yes, that's all the background is. recent criminal history, not sure how many years they go back.

med history - Wouldn't HIPAA have fun with that one!

So you are advocating for a change in the law when you don't know what it is today? No offense man, but that's pretty ignorant.

So at least a week for a background check....why? They currently check criminal history, and that takes minutes and not a week. Are you recommending that for a "cooling off" period so someone pissed off can't go buy a gun and shoot someone that day? If so, I don't see how that will stop these well planned out mass murders?

Sure, it seems innocuous changes on the outset, but if it doesn't fix the problem then why are we doing it?
Old     (psudy)      Join Date: Dec 2003       03-29-2018, 7:55 AM Reply
No offense taken. Like I said, I have not purchased a gun without a CC in many many years. I am for "cooling off periods" There is no reason anyone needs a gun "that day." If a criminal background check only takes "a minute" That could also be part of the problem. They need to slow down the process so it can be looked at a little harder. It certainly wouldn't hurt anything.

But if it doesn't help anything, why put it in place? Just for fun?

So basically the recommendation is that just in case someone may be going to buy a gun and shoot someone, everyone else now has to wait a week.

What about that abused mother who is scared because she is on the run and her husband beat her that morning? What about someone who just got 2-3 very threatening phone calls and is scared for their life?

I think you are only seeing guns as offensive weapons, when in reality they are used more as defensive weapons. (For the majority of people)

You are speculating that it wouldn't help anything, just as I am speculating it might. Look. I am a gun advocate myself. I have a lot of guns and Hunt everything I can. I just don't think anyone should be able to walk into a gun shop and walk out with AK/AR in 20 minutes. There is no need.

Then what'st the answer? Seems to me every one of these has been Gov failure with the current laws we have, just illegal immigration. Why don't we try to enforce the laws we do have, make sure certain people are put on the registry. I can't just walk in & buy, I have to submit my app, wait for the system to process me & since I am clean with nothing on my record I get my new toy. I struggle with raising the age to 21, part of me says it's a no brainier cause most 18 yr olds these days are total dip****s. But that's not fair to the responsible ones who have demonstrated excellent gun skills & respect, mostly these are the ones raised responsibly around fire arms.

I completely agree the current laws need to be followed and enforced. I am mixed on the age requirements for the reasons you mentioned too. We can send an 18 year old into war but when he gets home he can't buy a pistol? IDK.....

Im actually not speculating, none of the recent mass shooters had purchased their guns within a week of the tragedy.

Ok, so you are changing your tune now. So you want a waiting period of....1 week....for ar/ak style weapons only? What about an ar22 which is 22 cal and not 223. Still a week? What about a semi auto that shoots 223 like the mini 14, but not actually an AR rifle, still a week?

1: Ban assault style weapons.
These aren't used for hunting they are designed for efficient killing of people so why do we need them in the public. You can't have a grenade launcher why do you need an assault weapon?

7: Require licenses for firearms, just like cars.
This seems like a no-duh one, why are you against this? If we require licenses, we can track them and we can see who is selling them to scumbags. Christ you need a license for a dog but not a gun, how does that make any sense?

8: Raise the minimum age to 21. You can't buy a beer before 21 why should you be allowed to buy a gun? You can get a gun under 21 if you join the military but they train you and you don't get to take the gun home with you on the weekends.

10.Ban sales to domestic abusers. This is NOT a law at this time. We can't even keep people that are on the No-Fly list from buying guns with our current laws.
Old     (psudy)      Join Date: Dec 2003       04-03-2018, 8:04 AM Reply
1) BS.
2) Just ban private sales. No reason for everyone to get licenses.
8) I struggle with this one. I somewhat agree but if you can go fight a war you should be able to buy a shotgun
10) Not sure you are correct on that one. If you have been convicted of domestic violence, at least here, you cannot purchase a gun.

None of it addresses the actual problem - schools are still gun free zones. WhyTF is this so hard to understand?? Guns are everywhere, putting a few rules on new gun sales isn't going to fix the actual problem.

You're read the arguments for why over and over again. You chose not to believe them. Why keep beating a dead horse?

You said "these aren't used for hunting" Thats why I said BS. I use mine for hunting(pic) and know others that do too. Do you need it for hunting? No. I am not for a ban of them, but do think it needs to be a lot harder to purchase. I also agree that person to person sales need to be done away with.

I reread the thread and you did say at the start of this thread that
" It's a military grade weapon and we have them because of the 2cd amendment. The 2cd amendment exists so that the people can fight the government if needed. How are the people going to fight if they don't have serious weapons? "

So you honestly believe that you and your drinking buddies are going to go up against the Army, Navy, Air Force and Marines to "Fight tyranny"? That is gonna be one quick fight. I don't know if you've noticed, but your guns SUCK compared to Drones, guided missiles, etc that you are think you are going to go up against. I've think you may have watch "Red Dawn" one too many times.

I guess you prefer to be unarmed and defenseless against any and everything???? When did being a pussy become such a noble thing to do? You do understand how we got here, right? As Americans?

We had to fight for our independence. Against a much larger, much stronger and much better equipped British govt and military. And we won.

Don't ever look at a gun the rest of your life if you want, but you can F**K OFF trying to tell the rest of us how to live.

HAHAHA So you actually do think you've got a chance against the military! BWHAHAHA that is the dumbest thing I've seen on this thread!!!!
Is it too soon to make bets. Last time I checked my history books the British had muskets and we had muskets. You don't stand a chance with your AK against a heat seeking drone. You will just be another black and white splatter video.
Coward.

If you're not going to educate yourself on the facts, then please stay out the debate. Last thing we need is a bunch of ignorant people trying to change laws they don't understand in knee jerk fashion.

I briefly read the headline, sounds like 4-5 injured but only the shooter dead from killing herself?

Its no different than using a bolt action rifle. You still only get one shot.

lol. How did you get back to this based on my last comment to you? Man you love to argue. And I think you already said all of what you just posted, and I saw it the first time you said it. Again, you chose not to buy that argument, and that's fine with me. I'm not going to try and change your mind. I shared my beliefs and opinion and if you don't agree that's fine.

I will say that you're assuming that military and law enforcement would side with the government and go to war against the people. Maybe they would. But every LEO and military person I know are constitution loving, 2cd amendment loving people that are quite unhappy with increased gun laws and over-government.

And whats with the beer drinking buddies and Red Dawn movie stuff? Does that make you feel better about trying to get your point across? Have you grouped all constitution / 2A supporters into some kind of redneck bucket?

It's not fear that compels people to carry a gun. Its the belief in fighting back and being able to defend family and loved ones. I carry everywhere. Not because I'm scared, but because if something was to happen, I would be able to fight back depending on circumstances. If the youtube incident was to happen in my office, I would have a chance to help depending on the circumstances, instead of hiding and running helplessly while my coworkers were being shot.

Here's the problem with your argument & the conclusion I've come to. LEO & Military will do what they're told by who's ever charge & cutting their paycheck. They have families to feed & the vast majority will simply be "following orders". We've seen it countless times here, throughout history. Unless the stuff was to hit the fan all at once & the entire nation went to war & people chose sides. But that isn't going to happen. Say LA broke out into full scale war, do you think anyone is going to leave their jobs from other states to go fight? Unless they're single & really want to be in a fight they're going to stay home, feed their families & make a little love to their wives. The cops & military in LA will do as they're told to keep getting a pay check, it's simply human nature. Sadly, this will apply to the great gun round up, most are simply going to simply bury some, turn in the rest & after a few are made examples of by the law the rest will cave. Sad but true & all the more reason I am sick & tired of the rights complacency on the issue. They are letting the left drive the narrative, drive the laws, they're organized, funded & ready to rumble & the right is sitting on their asses convinced it'll take a civil war & they have all the guns so they'll win. It won't go down like that. The left is learning from terrorists, South American revolutions, they're making talking about killing people on the right the norm & they will win by simply doing what Che & Castro did in Cuba.
