Is it a marine specific alternator? If not I have seen 140amp alt. for under 175 at different places.

Depending on your requirements try ebay-ing "marine alternator" I justs bought a refurbished AC Delco 100amp 3 wire for less than 100 bucks including shipping.

There is a huge differnce in price from a 90/100 amp alt up to 160. You can find "cheap" ones on ebay. that sounds like a fair price.

I just purchased a brand new marine 140amp Delco 3-wire from DB Electric out of TN for $100. I haven't had a chance to install it yet, but it looks nice. They sell on ebay. I know just recently they had a 100 amp 1 wire for around $70.

D@@@mmit, I was waiting to see if they had a 140 but it never showed, so I got anxious and bought a 100amp. Jeff, keep me posted on how it works.

Will do. I worked with Ron and he was AWESOME to work with. I took several pictures and measurements to make sure the delco unit would fit properly. I sent Ron the numbers off my stock alternator to match up the wiring harness and he even labeled the wires so that I know what to splice into. He also gave me an unconditional warranty and replacement if it doesn't fit for some reason.

FWIW, I also bought a 140 battery isolator for somewhere around $70. I paid $180 for both shipped.

Give Ron a call. I don't think he will list a 140 amp on ebay. I'm 99% positive he can take your 100 amp and re-wind it for a 140 amp output (assuming you bought his 100 amp delco). 800-753-2242 Tell him that Jeff from Arkansas sent you.

Ewing: Yes your right. The threaded rod is a 6 inch and the next size is 8 inch. So its either to long or to short 7 inch would have been perfict. The heims are in there pretty long at least 1/2 inch. There's is not that much tourq on that adjustable rod it just keep's the belt tention perfict.

Cut the 8" down to 7" any semi competent machine shop can tap the rod properly. I always like the look of those tensioners the best...have made a few for some cars here and there. I am sure they have lasted for a while just hate to see one break.

You should also call your engine manufacture to make sure the wiring harness on your engine will support the higher amperage and not void your warranty. There are 200 plus units depending on what you want to spend.

Nate: The Place in SJ Autolectric's is cool. I went threw about 3 of there 130-140 amp alternator's Long story. So you can try them out if you wann dick around. It might work out for you. The thing is you can have the biggest Donkey alternator known to man and your still gona blow it up. The smart regulator system that Balmar makes is what makes the differance. Im pretty sure you could buy a cheeper alternator and then match it with a smart regulator from balmar and it would do the trick. With out getting super deep into it the smart regulator has diffrent charge program's depending how big you battery bank is and what kind of batterys you have it regulates the charge and advances or retards the charge depending on the state of charge and the tempature of your batterys and the temp of your alternator. Yes the regulator will back the charge off if it feel's the alternator getting hot. That's one of the things that will save your alternator. Its been discussed over and over here Ill find a link that talks about the Balmar system I built.

I just did a search it seems as if the thread Im talking about is gone. It was called "A Serious Charging System" see if you can find it or drag it up.
