I grew up around man-made bunny slopes and looking to take a few buddies on a real snowboard/ski vacation for a long weekend. I want to experience what real slopes and resort towns are like.

Suggestions??

Im in FL but open to anything within reason...not looking at being dropped off in the middle of nowhere either.

Gotta go out West to be honest. Park City Utah is among the best (Vail, Aspen, etc are cool but extremely expensive) and you can never go wrong with Tahoe in California. If you go to Tahoe Heavanly is great for skiing and Northstar better for boarding. Even Bear Mountain and Mammoth are great too.

I'd go to Park City or Tahoe depending on time of year and snow fall though. Park City has a great night life and not as expensive as some of the upper scale resorts like it.

depends on what are you wanting from the 'resort town'? planning on going out at night? or saving money and just hanging with your group?

I'm most familiar with CO, so for example
- copper mountian has no town, just the resort village, you go here if not interested in night life, but the mountain is a blast.
- vail is basically a giant resort that has absorbed the original town. hard to get away from the 'resort feel' there. you go hear to spend tons of money. nightlife is around, kind of hard to find, but we did find women's lube wrestling one night. good times since we got picked as lube appliers one round. the mountain(s) is huge.
- breckenridge still retains the original town feel with the resort piggy backing on the town so to speak. you get a good nightlife/town feel hear with an actual downtown, but also the most 'townies'.
- wolf creek, skip the town/resort/high lift prices all together for tons of pow.

Nightlife...guys im going with and I want to go out. Not necessarily rage but have options to get away a bit. We're all single in late 20s early 30s.

No vail or aspen. Just want an awesome change from our beach weather, never been in real snow, snowboard, nightlife for a nice 3-4day trip. No need for strip clubs...we have plenty here right behind vegas.

Then for Colorado, breck is hard to beat. You can get a place in town, and walk to the lifts and the bars. Weather you get a cheap place on vrbo, or stay at the resort, you are close to everything. If you go Colorado, the good snow doesn't start showing up until end of January.

Of course tahoe has great night life, but not sure if you'd have to drive/taxi to get around. Haven't been there since 15yrs old.

Dont' know about Utah, its on my to do list this winter.

I would look at utah or co since air travel time will be less than ca. in Utah, you can get to slopes in 45min from airport I think. Colorado you have a 1.5+ hour drive up the mountain.

I would also recommend Breckenridge for the nightlife. I've been to Vail, Keystone, Copper, Breck, Jackson Hole (sick steep trails and lots of pow!) Snowbird, Brighton, and Tahoe. Tahoe is pretty sweet cause you can go to the casino at night and it has amazing views of the lake and pretty good night life.

Breck or Tahoe. Heavenly area for Tahoe

PARK CITY UTAH - PERIOD end of discussion...

Go ride the Canyons & Park City Mountain Resort.

Thanks guys!!! Im getting excited and already started researching. My ex's family had condos in Vail and Aspen and we never went cause the ***** didnt want to be cold

Would January be ok for Park City? Before the Sundance of course?? Or do I need to wait until February?

As I was researching this today my mother who is in Dubai now, suggested I join her for the holidays in the Swiss Alps??

May put that on hold and not burn through my vacation that fast. Besides I want to go on a guys only trip...it would be the bachelor party I never had.

If you're going to ride in Colo for more than 5 days it's worth looking at the Epic/Local/Summit passes, which go up in price Oct 14

Peter Glenn on Idrive in Orlando carries the Epic passes if you end up looking into CO LR3. I think they're discounted passes too

Wonder if its the same Peter Glenn here a 1/4mile from my house in Tampa??

Look into South Lake Tahoe. Plenty of nightlife and Casinos.

Not sure I'd recommend Park City as others here have. I guess it may depend on skill level or the type of riding you're in to. Seeing as you're from FL you'll probably enjoy it. They do have a large village. As far as the quality of riding there goes, I thought it was terrible. It's super flat and real busy, just like Northstar up here in Tahoe. I really liked SLC overall, but I'd recommend Snowbird. It's 10X more mountain than Park City or The Canyons. It puts those places to shame.

My recommendation would be for Steamboat. That's my fav place to ride. Good snowboard park, awesome snow. fun town, but not a huuge resort like vail or anything. that's definitely my fav place to go and i wanna go back now.. haha

This is a good recommendation. I remember getting stuck in the valley or whatever at Heavenly due to strong wind. Nothing like the same hundreds of people stuck riding the same valley for a while.

A-dub I don't see a Floridian enjoying snowbird. You're right that place is huge and very easy to get lost and have no idea where you're going and how to get back. Just like the stupid California/Nevada sides of Heavely except Snowbird is even bigger. As far as terrible riding I do have to ask when you went and what time of year? One of my child hood friends rides professionally and takes pics for snowboard magazine. He, along with all his little pro buddies, all live in Park City and love it. He's told me repeatedly he's had some of the best riding he's ever had in that area. I'm not saying it's better than snowbird, but I feel it will have a better party atmosphere and a slightly smaller resort with top notch terrain. The big places are a pain in the a$$ when you go in a big group because someone at some point will want to venture off and good luck finding everyone at the end of the day.

LR3 it's the same Peter Glenn they have them all through the state so if the one on Idrive has current year passes than so will the one in Tampa. We also did store transfers so if they don't have something in Tampa they can pull it in from another shop.

My observation had nothing to do with snow conditions. I'd guess your friends are park rats. In that case Park City is probably superior to Snowbird. I don't ride park at all, I like it steep and deep and there is absolutely no question that Snowbird is superior to Park City in every way other than the snowboard park. It's bigger, has significantly more vertical and is way, way steeper than Park City and the Canyons. Like I said, mostly depends what kind of snowboarding you prefer.

And just to add another destination. I know you said US, but you should really look into Whistler/Blackcomb. If you're already considering traveling all the way to the West Coast it really isn't any further.

From someone that lives in Salt Lake and has spent time in most of the ski areas around the country, I would do this:

Park City

BUT have a rental vehicle. Ride Park City and Canyons, but also make sure to take at least one day and ride Brighton and/or Snowbird. Brighton/Snowbird are way different riding and much more of the big mountain, wild west experience than the tame slopes at Park City/Canyons. Canyons does have some great freeeriding up on 9990 and Super Condor, but it still doesn't touch the cottonwood resorts (Brighton/Snowbird). Driving to these resorts will be around 1 hour from Park City

By having that rental, you'll get to experience a wide variety of terrain, and still have the fun, ski town atmosphere that Park City offers.

Also, make sure to buy your lift tickets in Salt Lake, before you head up the mountain. You will want to get them here:

https://www.skinsee.com/discount-lift-tickets

There is a ski-n-see in Park City, but it doesn't offer these deals.

As far as time of year, I personally tell people to come Feb or early March for the best snow. Later Jan can be great too, but you never know.

Another vote for Park City... maybe my favorite place on earth!

If you really want a treat, stay at the St. Regis, Deer Valley... It's crazy nice (as you would expect), but the best part is that it's built literally on the mountain (Deer Valley), so you can ski right out from the "ski lobby" and be going down the slope. They have valet service for your skis and boots. They take all the hassle out of the experience. They even help you get your boys on and off (no joke).

Only issue with Deer Valley is you can't board there, only ski.

Screw the night life. WOLF CREEK is the only way to IMHO. Most snow in Colorado, bar none. Look at the history books. I've been to Wolf Creek , 3 times at different parts of the year, all have been great. Actually going back for a week in January. Best part about this place is, they actually encourage off trail riding, tree riding, and there are some awesome bowls (boundary and horseshoe). Nearly all the people stay on the right side of the mountain, few venture to the left, even less hike 5-15 minutes for some absolutely great untouched, sometimes chest high powder!

I grew up going to park city, snowbird, Brighton, old park west... None of those places compare to the level of powder wolf creek gets every year!

I agree with wolf creek I went there 2 years ago during spring break and it was still waist high powder. Ill definitely be going back there. Vail is an awesome resort just because of its size. I would live to go there every year bit it crazy expensive.

+1 for Breck. It's like a sore pecker... You can't beat it!

Whistler. I boarded for 2 full days and didn't touch the same run twice except to get to the bottom. Vancouver is AWESOME too. Best place I have ever been. SO BIG! For powder, Wolfcreek. Vail, Aspen, Mammoth, Heavenly are like the plague. I hate big money resort towns. I like Steamboat, Breck, Copper, Winter Park, Snowbird. Durango is cool too. But like I said. I'm not much into big money and crazy nights.

Other than Whistler I would do a trip with Wolfcreek and Durango mixed up ANY DAY!

I'm not big on the parks. I like long, fast runs. Tree's and powder.

Tahoe is cool too. I stayed in Reno and made the drive. Heavenly is tough if the snow is a little wet. Not a great boarding mountain.

Wolf creek is the best. hand down. No park, no nonsense, just good solid fun boarding.
