1995 Mastercraft ProStar 205

I am looking at purchasing one of these and was wanting to get peoples opinions of this boat for wakeboarding, surfing and skiing. Here is the link

Ideally you would want to look at 96 and newer 205's. They have a little taller freeboard and share the same hull as the OG Xstar and the current X1. As a starter boat that would still be a solid boat for skiing and boarding. I have no idea about surfing but because of the low profile might be hard to get enough weight to surf well. That price is also high in my opinion. That boat with no tower and single axle trailer should be in the 10-12 range. Other boats in that price range and year range to look at would be the 93 or 94 and newer Supra sunsport(whichever one has the round windshield so it has fiberglass stringers and floors), sport nautique, super sport nautique, MAlibu sunsetter LX and a couple others.

That price seems a little high. Those things are great for skiing and footing. I personally prefer the ski wake on one of those to that of a late 90's prostar 190. From a wakeboarding perspective, it's not going to be a huge wake, but it's clean. I've never played with much weight in one though. They are also very narrow, so interior space can be an issue once you start piling gear in. With regards to quality, they are built nice and solid. Not a lot of rattling or trans noise. I have a friend with a 92 , that he bought new. The boat has never been back to a shop of any sort.

Agree with everything brett and SS said. I noticed in my own search for a wake boat in this price range that these were consistently priced higher than I thought they were worth. Might be b/c a lot of people think these older 205s have the same hull as the orig. x-star, which brett pointed out isn't 100% correct.

Weird choice for pictures to use to advertise, $15k boat and 1 of the 4 pics is the spare tire?

I agree that they are over priced, but this probably is a good example of what people talk about when they say some brands have better resale than others. I'm not a MC owner, but I'll acknowledge that they are well built and have a great reputation. That reputation extends way back. As such, they command a premium of sorts. I know skiing isn't overly popular on this board, but that boat also has value to skiers, which does help it's resale value.

This is another one that I found, this is a better option for a all around wake, ski and surf. To me there doesnt look like much of a difference but then again I am not as versed in Mastercraft and there differences. I can see that the freeboard is a little steeper but that is all I noticed. What is the predator engine? Is the an upgrade for the engine? Thanks for all the comments it is helping me gain some more knowledge.

Nice looking boat. Looks sharp. The 97 should have more beam too. I'm not sure what all engines would be available on that boat, but I'd think the LT1 is the high end motor on that model. At that price range, my guess is you can find a v-drive. Not likely to find a MC though, unless it's a maristar.

I guess they really do hold their resale value well...I sold my '97 205 with tandem axle trailer for $20k...in 2003!

96 and on have the wider beam, and deeper gunnels. The LT1 is the high end motor for that year, but the Predator will do just fine for any needs.

A 96 Hydrodyne Grand Sport or 2000 Sport Nautique would both be very solid options for the right price.

The Hydrodyne. It looks fairly clean. It also has the GT40 motor which is arguably the best inboard engine ever produced.

My nephew bought a 1996 Hydrodyne Gran Sport (his first boat) this past Summer and he has loved it. It also has the GT40 in it and it is awesome. I was very impressed with it - very well built. The dealer installed a tower and the total package was right at $10,000. I was not familiar with the brand until I looked at his. Solid boat. Nice wake when weighted properly. Does anyone know what happened to Hydrodyne?

Went out of business around soon after 96. Great boats, very solid. I am not 100% sure, but I believe there was wood in the interior, and with boats at that time moving to no wood at all, they were in a tough spot and in a losing battle with the bigger companies. my opinion, and I can easily be wrong
