You're on the right track, get a faster lens like the 70-200. f2.8 will make a huge difference over f5.6 and crank up your ISO as you're stuck needing high shutter speeds shooting anykind of action/sports. Then go invest in Noise Ninja or another good noise reduction program. The Nikon images really need that above ISO800. Depending on how well lit the gym or field is you'll probably be forced to use ISO1600+ even at f2.8 to get any kind of reasonable fast shutter.
