I am looking into buying an older sport Nautique, something around the early 90's. I am trying to figure out my finances, and am going to set up a savings account for boat repairs and such. I am trying to figure out how much I need to set aside- and am trying to figure out some worst case engine repairs that could pop up in a year or so on an older boat like this. How much would you set aside for something as serious as an engine rebuild, transmission problems, or replacement on either if needed. How common are these problems on an older boat that has been taken care of?

I would say these kinds of problems are UNCOMMON on these types of boats... CC and MC's had great build quality even in the early 90's... I personally own a 90 Prostar with 879 hrs on her and she performs flawlessly... If its been taken good care of, and its easy to tell... You should have years of use left in them! I've seen early malibu's even with 2000 hrs on them still going strong.

If you had to save for something I would suggest interior work. Vinyl is usually the first to go...

agreed. know what you're buying and you'll be fine. 200 hours into my used boat and she runs like a champ. vinyl's starting to get rough...

I would say that I have never spent more than $500 on repairs on my boat in any given year. Usually it is far less, somewhere around $100-$200. Then again, I have never taken my boat in for repair. Some of the things that you can expect to spend money on would be a carb rebuild about once every 2 or 3 years and any other standard maintenance such as belts and an impeller. You can also guarantee that you are going to ding your prop some time over the next few years. That is going to cost you at least one Benjamin. ($100)
