Does anybody know what you need to start your own website. I'm not looking for anything major just something for the local riders get on and talk about upcoming events.

Definitely not trying to take away from wakeworld

talk to mike from midwestwakeboarder.com, he may be able to help you out. Go post on the forums, because he started a site like you are saying for all the midwest people.

Joomla is a good system, it's free. you probably need to be a slight bit savvy however to do it yourself.

go to godaddy.com
register domain name
sign up for hosting
get the free forum add-on (I know it exists, haven't actually used it)
if they work as advertised, you are up and running.

godaddy is great...

BUT, Google actually has a free hosting service that includes a very simple, integrated webpage construction toolset that will allow you to both assemble your site (without any HTML knowledge) and publish it directly to your Google site.

If you want to register a domain, you can host that domain through Google. ie, you pay for the domain, but Google's services are free. but there's gonna be some small advertising.

Here's what you need ideally for launching a website:
--a web designer (ideally a graphic designer and web designer working together).
--money. If you can find a web design student, you might be able to get some free work...
--a domain.
--a webspace host (there are a bevy of options when it comes to hosting, services, and add-ons so be sure to consult someone about this before jumping).
--an email host.

here's what you need simply for launching a website:
--patience to learn coding OR a free website assembly tool.
--a domain.
--a free web/email host (google).
--perseverance.
