Found this when i was doing some random searching
Though the design is completely different (than the wake kite we know today), the one back in the 60's and 70's actually resembled a kite... and i bet the crashes were the same as a kite too... more like the wego. At least the modern wake kite has illiminated the death factor ;)

They used to be into that at my lake. One guy, Jack Davis used to use an 1000' foot rope, detach and hang glide over the mountain out of sight. They used a regular hang glider from a dock start. This guy has put 2 kids through college and still does backwards deepwater barefoot starts. Totally hardcore.

Its called a Flat Kite. We used it in the show at Cypress Gardens up until late 90's. It was a blast, but you definately needed a experienced driver and person working the release on the boat. My dad and friends did it back as far as 1950.
