New to the board and have a question about getting a first boat. I am currently looking at a 2002 Air Nautique, and I was recently told that in 2002 the air nautique hulls were changed to reflect the Ski Nautiques, and that the 2002 Air Nautique would not put out a good wake, and thus I should stick to the 00, 01 Air Nautiques or to the SAN. Is this accurate. What are general opinions on the 2002 AN's? I am a novice to say the least, but don't want to buy a boat that will quickly limit me down the road, and or have poor resale value due to a known design issue/type. Thanks!

Ha haa, this will be a great thread... Here is a pic of myself riding behind a 02 SANTE @ 75' and 23.5 mph, can't ask for a better wake with 900 lbs. Go with the SAN! Sorry no help on the hull design of the Air N...

BTW, I am not trying to knock the AN in anyway, this was just something I was told, and since I really don't know for sure, I thought I would ask. I am not implying the AN is not good, just want to know if there is a huge difference or not...sounds like 1 vote for yes thus far, haha.

I believe you are correct and the Air Nautique was switched to the 216 hull in 2002 or 2003. 01 and prior Airs were based on the sport nautique hull, a DD version of the 210/super air. The 216 is more of a ski boat and I wasn't really all that impressed with the wakeboard wake. We didn't try to weight it beyond the factory system though. Post on planetnautique.com and I'm sure you'll get a much more detailed response.

I did a bunch of research myself and found that there is no real source that documented nautique hull changes. There are some people out there that really know their nautiqes. If you want to go with a direct drive boat and maximize your wake, then you'll want to stick with an older sport nautique (95-97). This hull is the same hull as the Super Airs (until the recent change). The Air Nautique hull is a bit different in that they played around with the hull on and off for a couple of years. The hull eventually became more skier friendly. The Pro Air Nautique was known to be a good hull but didn't last long as the industry was shifting to v-drives at that point. read this thread and pay attention to Dan Fishburns post about half way down. This is one of the more accurate rundown on hulls that I have run across. http://www.wakeworld.com/MB/Discus/messages/65921/98227.html?1076734216

Chris!! Don't you love how they keep changing hull designs and names so you can never get a good understanding for what changed when?! As mentioned, the Planet Nautique webstie will have some good information as well. I'll keep hunting for you though!

My first boat was a 02' SAN 210! I absolutely loved that boat! I have a friend that has an 01' SAN and we cannot for the life of us get it to put out a wake like the 02' did! It's still a great wake but just not the same! I have an X-Star now and would ride behind that 02's SAN over it every day of the week!! Hence my X-Star is for sale!!

Greg - The '01 and '02 hulls are the same so how are you saying you couldn't get the same wake on both?

Why do people post things that they think are true? Facts are easy to come by, especially with a 8-10 y.o. nautique. Its like this post from yesterday. http://www.wakeworld.com/MB/Discus/messages/3183/721584.html?1249325641

His 01' didn't have the KGB ballast and so we put one of the locker sacs instead! That was the only difference we could come up with though.

Hey guys, READ THE POST. HE IS NOT REFERENCING A SAN/210, he's talking about the direct drive AN. With that being said a v-drive/SAN will be your best option... the 02 and 01 SAN are identical from the rub rail down. I've ridden behind both year boats many, many times...
