Isn't that what a zoom lens is for?

The depth perception is probably screwed up making it seem like they are closer than they are. As long as the driver knows what he is doing I don't see it as too big of a deal.

Looks like a candidate for the Darwin Awards, at least an honorable mention!

That's not Gerry Nunn, and the guy on the left is by far heavier than the guy on the right! Haha!

I'd say that they're not QUITE as close as it looks, but he's probably just a few feet forward from the nose of the boat. Hahn, as for the guy on the left, since the boat is in the middle of the wake, near one side, chances are that it's just leaning that way because of the water forces there near the wake. You've driven chase boat... you know how it is. If you were the one on top... well, yeah, I'd blame it on weight.....

they have to be pretty close- zoom lens doesn't work very well for action shots because it reduces the depth of focus to almost nothing and if the rider moved either towards or away from the camera at all he would go out of focus.

Well that's true with SLR's and DSLR cameras, but not with point-and-shoot cameras. That photo was shot with an Olympus C5000Z, a smaller point-and-shoot digital. They have much more depth of field at any given focal length than a SLR-style camera. Makes it tough to judge...

Also, I use a zoom lens for 90% of my action shots, and it seems to work fine!
