I need a bit of advice on what I'm doing wrong. I just can't seem to drop the rope for any longer than about 5 seconds. I'm 6'3 and about 240lbs riding an 5'4 IS blue lake. The board feels fast but just slowly drifts backwards off the wave. I've posted on the malibucrew about the boat ballast for my 03 wakesetter lxi (direct drive) and have the best wave i can get with the wedge /sacs (200lt centre mls & 3 x 540lb bags) that i have. Since the board and boat are fine i think the problem lies with me. I had a look at the video i've linked (sorry for the crap quality) and I think i'm too far back on the board as i tend to keep my rear foot on the kick pad (don't really think i need to!). I had a look at the board yesterday and marked a point where i think my front foot should go which is just where the nose starts to curve up, just near the front of the grip pad. this seems to have brought my rear foot in a bit and put my weight more centrally on the board. So, am I on the right track with what i've done so far or is there anything else i should be doing? Before it's suggested losing 40lbs is too much hard work! We're out on the water again on Monday so any help before then would be great.

There are tow things to suggest from the video.

1. You seem a bit heel heavy, so get you feet and weight on the toe side edge more. If that does not work, then move forward a bit.

2. Slow the boat a little.

Although the Blue Lake is a great board, I would recommend at least to start with you find a Hyperlite Landlock 6ft board. You might get a store to loan you one or just charge you a couple of bucks. I have a son about your size and used to have a 21ft Maristar and he was able to ride all day behind it without the rope. Due to the board's large size it is more forgiving but has less performance. Just my opinion.

I'm with Dennis, scoot your feet more toward the toe side edge of the board, that is the edge that is actually gripping into the wake, and it will help you maintain that grip. Also slide your front foot a little further forward. Press/shift your weight to the front foot to accelerate, and to the rear to hit the brakes. It doesn't take much, just a little either way.
If you can, practice with a indo board, it will help get the feel of it.

Like mentioned above, move toward the toe side a bit more, but also get up on the balls of your feet, you look like you are leaning back as if you are wakeboarding.

Unless your having stability problems I disagree with moving to a HL Land Locked board. The IS Blue is a very good board, very fast and should work for your weight.

I do agree with weight forward, moving toes to the edge, and slowing the boat. I run 210 to 225. I've ridden the smallest boards from Trick Boardz. You should be able to ride the Blue. Give it some more time.

Also, learn to pump the board. Pumping the board up and down the wake will give you more speed than

ummm...guys? Am I the only one that thinks he needs to move forward on the wake? He is pushing the limits of the board/wake combo at his size and in my experience, the further back you get on the wake the more the push is diminished.

Note where Judy-with-antlers is on the wake (closer to the boat) in relation to the video. My 2 cents, shorten the rope 5 feet and follow all the move closer and forward advice, if needed.

I see that the rope gets lose and then he falls back in the pocket, then the cycle repeats. That tells me he's close. I think he just needs more weight forward. Toes to the edge seems to help beginners get more drive. I don't think he has a wake or equipment problem.

Slowing the boat down helps to a point, that's up to the point where the wake still has a crisp edge.

SLOW THAT BOAT DOWN...
and this will make you have to ride closer like surfdad said. The combo of those 2 things should get you riding.

Thanks to everyone for taking the time to leave some really good advice. It's good to wake up and see that the forum has been busy overnight (well overnight in Australia anyway) and know that it's something I can fix and not have to spend more money on. I'll put all the advice into action tommorrow and with luck should be surfing without the rope. We'll take the camera out with us and i'll post up afterwards and let you all know how it went

yeah dude. im your size. inch shorter maybe 5 lbs lighter. but im also ridin a obrien alias 5.0. its a smaller board. with a little bitty wake from a 79 MC stars and Stripes. if i can learn and become fairly good with that, then you can ride with what you got, definitely.

move forward on the wake. I have to ride so close that i often get the nose of the board stuck on the swim platform. get more on the toe side of the board. i have found that standin in a closed stance works better for control. put your front foot closer to the toe side edge than your back. but your overall position needs to be closer to the toe side.

defintely get those pics up when you get back.

No photo's from today (only the wife and I headed out)but what a difference the advice i was given made. Went forward a bit more on the wave, moved forward on the board and toes to the edge and the board just about launched itself onto the platform. We still need to work a bit on the ballast / speed. Anything under 10mph doesnt seem to produce a clean wake (the speedo doesnt even start till 10mph!)and i end up drifting back and off the wave. We were just starting to sort out a speed when the fuel started to get a bit low (had to be from all the skiing before the surfing!) so we had to call it a day. At least there's somehting to work on for next time. Thanks again to everyone who posted - it's the first time I havent left the water feeling frustrated about the surfing.
