Changing steering cable...

How hard it is to change the steering cable on a Tige 20i? My mechanic said I should be looking at that in the near future. If I can do it myself I would like to but if its real elaborate I may let him do it. I am pretty handy but like to leave the hard stuff to the pros

It's not hard at all.

Just disconnect it at both ends.
Tie a rope, or fish tape to the steering wheel side. (unless you have the 1 piece rack and pinion. Then attach it to the other side).
Pull the cable out, while pulling the rope through.
Attach the rope to the new cable
Pull it through.
Hook up the ends of the cable.
Grease your rudder as long as your down there.

That's it. You just saved yourself a bunch of money.

Just wondering, is your steering getting tight?
If not, I would wait. They should last 7 years of so. If nothing else. You could order the part and keep it until you really do need it.

yeah its getting tight... I won't do this right away but maybe in june sometime... I have looked thru the TIge forum and they have a topic or two on the subject. Seems with V drives it can be a PIA but maybe my DD will be simpler. I am going to go ahead and order the cable from skidim if I can. anymore comments would be appreciated

I had a 94 Sanger DLX that was DD. I had to change the cable and the steering helm in it as Sanger stopped making the steering cable for their older boats. Honestly it went way easier then I thought it would. The hardest part wasn't running the cable but reaching into the rear and making the connection to the rudder. I pulled the rear seat, dog house and floorboards to get back to the rudder. I would not call it a hard job at all. Just pay attention to how you pulled it apart at the rudder and it will go smoothly. It took a full day but I had a lot more to do then just the cable!

I did it this year......it takes like an hour. The hardest part was fishing the cable through.

For the Sanger DLX what helm kit and cable did you purchase and where???

I thought it was pretty easy the hardest part for me was centering it making sure that the wheel turned evenly on both sides. Nothing too it!
