Hi all, I just installed a promariner charger for my 2 blue top optimas. Should I have set this as AGM or AGM HP? It seemed to work for about a day, but I went home today and was messing with the stereo and noticed the lights went off on the charger and the stereo battery is making a "sizzling noise". I meant to unplug the charger when I was using the stereo, but well...I forgot. Did I screw up the battery and/or charger? I have it all disconnected right now (battery negative disconnected from everything).

The battery is warm, but not hot. None of the terminals were especially warm. The charger is pretty warm, almost hot I would say. I double checked and everything seems to be connected correctly.

thanks

The sizzling is bad.

The Optimas are sealed batteries, but do have a valve that opens to release pressure if something goes wrong and the battery builds up pressure inside.

I am not sure if you screwed the battery up, or if it might be defective, but it sounds to me like the battery is screwed. I would take it back to the people you bought it from.

The optimas have a limit on how fast you can recharge them, so you do want it on the lower amperege setting.

Thanks, Just called the store-will be exchanging it ASAP. I got a voltmeter out last night and the "good" battery was reading over 15v while charger was on, the bad one only 13.x volts. I am glad I heard it before we went out to the lake!

^^^ over 15 volts!

Not good. You should ebe seeing no more than 13.6-14.2 when hooked up to a charger.

I am wondering if the problem is the charger, now that you point that out.

Hmmm. Could it be one bad battery causing it to charge the other one too high? The lights on the charger are not coming on now. (I have not had it on for long)
