Has anyone ever herniated a disc due to landing deep into the flats??? Just had an MRI after having back pain for a while, came back with a Herniation in my L5-S1.

herniating a disc is so easy to do. it can come from the simplest of activities.

I have had 4 of them now. I just had a disc fusion 2 days ago . Surgeon said it was totally not a typical vertebrae injury..... Cervical C3 C4 fusion. he also said it was the largest herniation peice he has ever pulled out of anyone in 26 years. The PA came in awhile later and verified this without solicitation by producing an Iphone pic of it and said it became the topic of the day in the operating room. lol

I spent two agonizing nights with constant pain (stubborn as hell) and finally went to the OR at 4 in the morning when it felt like my arm was gonna fall off and spent all night and the next day there. My neck, shoulder and pectorial felt like a lion taking a chunck out of all of them and finally went numb that night. The painkillers nor the numbness totally made the pain go away. It truly was a moment of clarity where I asked myself "wtf am I doing to myself?"

With this being my second major surgery inside a month related to wakeboarding It will probably be the end of progression for me. Of course I am saying this as Iie hurting in bed with no prospect of water fun for about a year.

Blew out a disc in my neck a few years ago. That healed. Blew out two discs this year in my lower back. Still healing and could only surf this last season. I did the physical therapy route and avoided surgery. I still have leg pain, but I'm about 70% recovered and should be fully recovered by spring.

BTW, I did this kneeboarding. Can't do that anymore, so I'll probably switch to wakeboarding.

Surgery is the best thing I ever did.... I waited for a long time on the first one and kept rehabbing it and it kept coming back. As soon as I had surgery it was fixed with zero pain for several years until I beat myself up again with another sport related injury. These discectomies are no big deal and highly effective with a good surgeon.

Dr. John E. Sarno for all back problems, even if a lot of people call him a quack!

I just got back a similar diagnosis. I don't think my body is cut out for this sport.

dude...my l5-s1 is herniated and the one above that is torn...all from a motocross injury back in january. I've gotten 3 epidurals and the dr. says I can't have anymore, and the pain is back full force. I have terrible sciatica, so bad that one leg is an inch longer that the other. I've wakeboarded once the whole season. The dr. says continue with physical therapy and it should heal on it's own....ya...right...10 months after the injury I'm still in pain and feel like a 27 y/o OLD MAN!

Ben, keep the faith. I jacked (herniated disk L5)my back up 2 years ago, had the sciatica bad and was averaging an epidural every 3 weeks. ( Ive had 4 of them) I could tell when they were wearing off. Needless to say its been a slow recovery. Ive started running/jogging daily and doing some stretches and thats helped out alot. I feel so much better. i was begging for surgery the two times my back went out completely but they just sent me home and to call a specialist. By the time that happened and got a visit I was on the mend. Just go easy and dont overdo it. I think twice about lifting objects and activities. The wife has banned me from boarding, but i still sneak in a sesh or two a season and surf the rest. Good luck to you, I wish you the best. Pain sucks.

I forgot to mention, I had no surgery, I'm pain free and I wakeboard at least 4 times a week. No problem at all I can do everytihing I want, but I watch my back with heavy lifting, just in case.
