I am a beginner/intermediate at best. I currently ride at 21.6 with stock ballast. The wake is clean but I have been told I should be riding faster. What do you think? Help me out local experts... I get the feeling the CIE crew will tell me to add another thousand and a half and bump it up 4 MPH Let's be realistic, I am not ready for that.

I say when you are riding directly behind the boat, you are able to pull on the rope and you should be able to advance yourself toward the boat with a little bit of a pull. That tells me that my board is planed out and I have crisp edge to edge control at that point.

I was riding at 21.6 but I weigh two bills and I ride a 138. I bumped the speed up to 24 and what a difference!!! Before I could only ride about 20-25 min because I was plowing through the water amd would get very tired. At the new speed it felt effortless and I was out for at least 45 min and didn't have to cut hardly at all to go w2w

In my opinion if you are a beginner you shouldn't ride much more than 22, my buddy with the avalanche has turned the speed down by .5 or 1mph since last year and shortened the rope and hes doen much better, dont think because the trend is longer/faster that that means thats what you need to do I ride 22.5 @ 70-75

Speed seems to be relative from boat to boat. I've been on a few boats where the speedo and ppass show speed that doesnt measure up when we bring in the GPS.... We had one guy who insisted he rode at 22.5, but when we got him behind the boat (calibrated ppass to GPS), he got the slam of his life. Turns out his 22.5 was off by like 3mph!

Personally IMHO, Speed shouldnt be faster nor slower depending on the skill of a rider. I know alot of people who travel at slower speeds and can throw down more than some guys at faster speeds. Of course when you weight down your boat more, youll need to be going a little faster. Do what feels right for you. If you feel comfy with a couple MPH faster and the wake is still clean and shaped well. Then great! I would say you just want to play around with it. Try different speeds at different lengths. Just do what feels good for you and how you like it.

I think how fast you go is really up to you and riding speed is as individual as most of the other variables in wakeboarding (line length, board size, stance width, etc.). Try different speeds and decide for yourself. I have found that if I go faster (24-25 mph) with a longer line (75'-85'), I get more height and distance in my wake jumps. However, faster speed also means more punishing crashes, so while I'm learning I elect to go slower (21-22 mph) with (65'-70') line. Speed and line length varies from boat to boat so I try to figure out what's slowest speed the boat can produce a clean wake at, then adjust line length and speed to where I'm comfortably clearing both wakes toeside and then work from there. Bottom line, IMHO, if you like 21.6, then ride 21.6. Do whatever makes you happy and helps you progress.

I ride at 23.2 you might want to try a bigger board, if you weigh 200 and ride a 138 that is small, i weigh 145 and ride a 140!

attila, why do you say you're not ready for a big wake and faster speed? imo, though it may be intimidating at first, big wakes make learning a lot easier. also, a 138 might be a bit small for a 200 pounder. try a bigger board if you can. or, invite me out and you can ride my marius. just weigh your boat down cie style! Hey Joe, I ride with Attila on his wife's boat all the time. Get your butt out there with us Mr. new to NorCal! If he would not let go of the rope so often, he would be riding much bigger! LOL Way to go Attila on landing that TS W2W 180!

Attila, yes you were doing SO much better yesterday than you were two months ago when I met you. However, what's up with letting go of the rope all the time? I'm going to start calling you Gabbie. Seriously though, thanks for the pull!
