I have an 2002 4Runner Sport Package with the towing package. I need to tow an X-9 - which weighs in at 2850 lb for the boat plus 860 lb for the trailer (single axle) = 3710 lb. I need to tow it (one time) 200 miles - but then it will be on a lift. Any comments?

The 4runner is rated for 5000lbs. It should tow it with no problem.

It will be slow on hills but should work fine. My friend tows '02 VLX w/tandem with same rig and has had no problems. Might want to reverse the ball on draw bar to compensate for tongue weight?

Pull it. It's a TOYOTA. It can take the abuse! Just look at the ones running around the middle east deserts and the hills of Afghanistan, probably without any maintenance!!!!

I have been pulling my 205, which weighs about the same, on a single axle with a 96 4Runner for more than four years without fail. The colors do match though! Tow on...

Awesome - thanks for the input.

I pull my PS 190 with our 2000 4Runner. It doesn't compare to my truck but it does fine. Definitely won't win any races but you will get there. Be sure and tow with overdrive off. I also press the ECT button to PWR.

I pulled my Air Nautique from Richmond, VA to Chicago, IL with my Tacoma. Could use more power for the mountains, but it did the job. Don't worry about it.

I pulled my boat with 400 lbs of lead and several coolers of beer in the bed of the Tacoma 350 miles to Table Rock Lake in Missouri(very hilly). Bottom line is this: It will work fine on flat roads, but it will definately struggle on the hills. Turn of the ECT don't use overdrive. A transmission cooler would be a plus. I think they're only like 100 bucks installed from UHAUL.

what is the HP rating on the four runner?

Don't you actually mean "rice" power? 3.8L V6 rated at 183hp at 4800rpm. And a "dinky" 217lb.ft. of torque at around 3600rpm.

it's not alway about hp and torque when towing; gearing is the most important thing.

Couldn't agree with you more.....here are some more specifics on an '02 SR5 4Runner equipped with 4 spd auto/OD. Final drive ratio of 3.727 and comes with torque lock.

Don't forget..... Stopping! :-) Going might be easy, but remember to give yourself plenty of stopping room when towing with a light vehicle.

I have a 2002 Malibu Wakesetter LSV (23' - pushing 5000lbs with a little gas) and I'm towing fine with a 2001 4Runner - I get kind of worried on long trips, though, and have to take a number of breaks so the tranny doesn't burn out. It's the hills that will kill you - 20 mph on a 65 mph highway is not the safest thing to be doing with 80k of vehicles.

PULL IT!! a Toyota can take it! i have a 4 runner that used to pull my x-5 great :-(
Even now though i have a bayliner that was packed down with camping gear this weekend and it worked good...i had a lot of hills too...mine will slow down some but i wouldnt trade it for anything..
My dad just bought a brand new tundra and it's towing capacity is rated #1 in front of other full size trucks!!
Toyota's rule!

Don't give too much credit. We only have a 3.4 liter...not a 3.8.
