Assuming things work out, I'm swapping out the JBL MR-22 in my VLX because it skips badly. The problems with the unit may be exaggerated by the angled mounting Malibu employs.

What will be the best replacement head unit with the following features:

- Wired Remote
- Front, rear, and sub out
- CD/maybe MP3?/Tape with CD contoller?
- NO SKIPPING! (maybe once in a while)
- Single DIN

I like having the remote at the driver's fingertips, especially since the head unit is under the arm rest. I don't have room for the Marine Clarion. Do the non-Marine Clarions use the same remote as the Marine?

I did a search and didn't find what I was looking for...

Clarion has the M335-RET that uses the same remotes with two channel outputs.

Take a look at the Sony MP70 or MP80. You can get it on ebay for $250 and absolutely will not skip. Just do a search for MP70. It has mp3, front, rear, and sub out, can control a cd changer, has an auxillary input, accepts XM Radio, etc.

You can get the Sony Marine wired remotes, but if you don't have room for the Clarion remote, you won't have room for this one..it is huge.

You can use the joystick remote the Sony makes as well. Sounds like it would be a perfect set up for you.

BT,

I am in the same position. The MR-22 has MANY problems but the two wired has me hesitant to change. I just looked at the Sony last night. The MP80. It appears it is the way to go. 4v preouts, nice LCD wired remotes, and it has a 15 seconds skip protection.

Great feedback!

I'm sorry - I meant I didn't have room for the Clarion marine deck with the big face. I have plenty of room for the remote.

I'm thinking either Sony MP80 or a Clarion Pro head if the marine remote works with it. I remember Doug H. had good things to say about the Clarion, but it seems the model numbers have since changed.

ALPINE, ALPINE, ALPINE, clarion has not really made any large leaps and bounds for head units. I use to own a clarion and loved it. not any more to many bad things have happen to alot of people I know. my alpine never skips

I'm in the same boat (hehe) as BT. I am seriously considering a new location for my head unit though. The under arm location sucks and the wired remotes short out from moisture! (I have two on order right now)

My first Sony Xplod unit got hammered by my dealer. I think they got more water in the stereo than on the outside of the boat. From day one, even a drop of water would short out the remote, and cause the display to malfunction. I now have a new head unit (same model) and hope it works out better than before. So far, it only skipped one time when we were going thru some pretty rough water at Havasu. Going out next weekend and will put it to the test.
