My brother has been trying tantrums for a couple weeks now and is stuck. He is now getting up high enough, and his rotation is good for the first 3/4, but then he pulls the handle across his body and stalls the flip and lands on his butt, switch. What are some good tips to make him keep the handle in a good position??

Thanks for any input you have.

hey thomas, your brother is basically not getting his trip flip edge going. and it's resulting in almost an off-axis bs 180. actually his rotation is not good for the first part - you just don't see the results of it until the last part! :-)

here's a side-by-side comparison with kyle schmidt doing a tantrum (*screen grabs from bump films higher learning dvd). first check out his form coming off the wake:

fix

look how turned towards the boat your brother is (compare the shoulders and board). he's never turned to get his trip flip edge. he should also stand up more at the wake, not have the knees so bent. this will give him a lot more pop and time.

fix2

now check out the head position. since your brother isn't really rotating up and over the rope, more around the back, he's looking over his back shoulder for the water, almost like turning around - instead of going over backwards. can your brother do a standing backflip off the boat? just wondering if he has any familiarity with the feeling of going straight over backwards. that will help.

also notice the slack in the rope. you shouldn't get slack in the rope if you're just rotating around it. your brother looks like he's going to pull the handle in for a handle-pass, which essentially he does.

so, first have him learn how to edge for the tantrum. take a nice wide cut, get some speed, then as you edge up the wake, turn your shoulders and stand up. try to think more about turning your shoulders than the board. lead with the upper body and the board will follow.

good luck to him!

Jim, you're asking the guy who ran into a rock wall for pointers? You sure you didn't go into the SC? JK, Chris when can you be back on the water? Are you going to Bluewater?
