Right up there with a tailfish.

It's OK to do them if you first explain to everyone in the boat your intent.

NEVER EVER do a fashion air followed by a Tindy.
Old    du540            08-23-2004, 4:25 PM Reply
There is no deal.

It's just considered "lazy" or "sloppy". Almost as if the rider cannot reach, with his trailing hand, far enough towards the nose of the board to get the full on Indy. Tailfish is the same....fake style.
Old     (brhanley)      Join Date: Jun 2001       08-23-2004, 4:49 PM Reply
Personally, I think we're all being a little dishonest with ourselves. Tindy and Tailfish = Bad, but Method (or whatever you want to call between nose and melan, nelan nolan??!??) and Slob = Acceptable.

The deal is that those grabs don't exist on skateboards because that area (between feet and tail or tip) does} not exist since your feet are spread the length of the board. Since it doesn't exist on the skate, ergo it is not cool on snow or wakeboard.

That being said, it is much harder to grab b/w your feet and looks way better syle-wise IMHO. I've drank the coolaid. But, I also know there are plenty of stylish riders that get away with those type grabs, em Danny Harf, and make them look super cool. Do what makes you happy/

since so many people will come down on the other side...

i feel the whole idea of "legitimate" grabs is ridiculous. and calling the grabs lazy only works if you're talking about w2w jumps. can you grab tindy or tailfish while doing a tantrum? or a hs bs 3?
Old     (dakid)      Join Date: Feb 2001       08-23-2004, 6:16 PM Reply
i don't think it's all that ridiculous.

whenever i don't grab right, i kick myself in the ass. when i do it, i wanna do it right. i guess i'm just that disciplined. (umali? disciplined? hahahahahaha!)

do i make fun of people when they do it "wrong"? no, but i do suggest how it would look better. kinda of a slick way of saying, "do it right, be0tch!"
Old     (deepstructure)      Join Date: Jun 2002       08-23-2004, 7:12 PM Reply
it's great that you want to do it "right," but that's where the logical of your statement breaks down. you predicate the very idea being discussed. circular logic.

we're having a discussion about IF there exists right and wrong ways to grab...therefore claiming it's "disciplined" to want to grab "right," is putting the cart before the horse. i would argue that your idea of discipline is misguided because there's no "right" way to grab, at least not in terms of location on the board.

it is only uncool cause some people called it uncool and then a lot of people jumped on the bandwagon. if you like it and you think it feels good and you think it looks good keep doing it. who cares what everyone else thinks.

I think I am going to start grabbing tindy a lot more now simply because it is 'uncool'. of course that just makes me more 'core'
Old    skippy            08-24-2004, 2:53 AM Reply
errrrr, no. actually its uncool because it is disrespectful to our skateboarding ancestors. ever see them grabbing tindy....

No! But there is something called progression. Isn't everybody talking about progression in wakeboarding? So why do all grabs have to be skateboarding grabs?
Old    reefhunter            08-24-2004, 4:49 AM Reply
This IS wakeboarding not skateboarding. I'm down with progression. A new time is born. Tindy and Tailfish the new core for 04 grabs!!!!!!!!!
Old    skippy            08-24-2004, 7:28 AM Reply
How can it be progression. To progress you need to move forward and advance. What advance are you making by grabbing the board on the easiest of all grabs. Sounds like your down for regression. If you want to be core try something different like getting up backwards..
Old     (fly135)      Join Date: Jun 2004       08-24-2004, 7:48 AM Reply
I don't have any skateboarding ancestors. Can I disrespect yours?
Old    skippy            08-24-2004, 8:23 AM Reply
of course you can. be my guest.

That's it, I am heading out this weekend and am gonna rock the Tindy, slash hard with the Tailfish, kill it with a Nosencholy, and throw down with some serious Nute grabs.

After I hit em all, I'm gonna learn em switch.

I will post pics.

Don't forget to finish it up with a Fantrum!

Fantrum??? Sounds sick, tell me more!!!

it's frantrum...get it right!
Old    r_dub            08-24-2004, 10:44 AM Reply
Hmmm, Fantrum.
Let's see, ahhh.
It could be a Tantrum with a pair of binoculars in your free hand.

Nosencholy! Nice.

If you make it look tight, no one cares. I've seen plenty of photos and videos with guys respected for their style -- Gregg Necrasson, Scott Byerly, and, yes, Randy Harris -- grabbing tindy, nosencholy, or slob (aka nute). Of course, they are usually poking a huge grab or doing a huge spin or flip.

There is some legitimacy to appreciating the difficulty in the trick, though. Is it harder to grab indy/mute/melan/stale than tindy/nute/nosen/etc.? Yes. Is it harder to grab tindy, nute, nosenchaly, tailfish than not grab? Yes. Is it harder to grab nuclear or crail than indy? Yes. I don't think most of us seeing a guy grabbing a nosenchaly roll to rev would not say to ourselves, "that guy just isn't stylish."

The other answer is to just be as poor a rider as me and be happy just to feel board down there and not get all off-axis on the way down. I grabbed Tail and it didn't feel any 'cooler' than Tindy.

Now, for a guy w/o skills, grabbing Method is quite the accomplishment, even without the good poke. Method's a real grab cuz you gotta hold the handle with the rear hand without doing a frontside 90 to edge catch to face plant to rojo ojo. Tried grabbing method on a HS jump and then poking the back foot towards the boat - off axis }buttflop to jewel ache.

I suck, and hope lack of style's not hereditary. Anyone want to ride with my son?

Seriously....I came from a skateboarding backround and I think the whole tindy thing is worn out. This is wakeboarding, not skateboarding. There are times when it is just a lazy grab (like W2W), and other times it just works. Tell me a tindy backside three or 180 isn't sick, especially if you give a nice poke.
Old     (flux)      Join Date: Jun 2003       08-24-2004, 1:18 PM Reply
I came from a snowboarding background. We used to scream for each other to tailfish or tindy when we lined up for kickers, it's actually just making fun of the purist notion that you should bot grab those areas of the board.

Any grab you do and do well, balanced, controlled, and poked or boned out, is damn good.

Any trick I stick is a good one for me, I can count all my tricks and grabs on both hands.

Frantrum is one I will have to work on though :-)
Old    edward            08-24-2004, 7:53 PM Reply
coming from my skateboarding background i tend to not grab those but if you can make it look good then thats all i care about really.derek just keep trying because the method is just one of those grabs that feel good when you poke it out good.
Old     (hoser325)      Join Date: Apr 2004       08-24-2004, 8:00 PM Reply
amen, flux. Any grab is a grab. Any grab is better than no grab. Why doesn't somebody give those so-called "taboo" grabs an offical name and place in the "wakeboard" world...not the skate world. (what's it called when you reach down and grab one of the fins...or your ankle...or your big toe...?) Just some thoughts :-)

Grab your nutes all you want but stay away from mine.

No tindy's or tailfish's for me.

Why dont we just grab our groin, its more stylish and it pleases the ladies.

groin, nutes, close enough.

Tindy Grab! In some countries they'd have your hand for that.
Old    wake__freak_66            08-28-2004, 12:06 PM Reply
wut exactly is a tindy grab?
Old    murrayair            08-28-2004, 12:11 PM Reply
It's when you grab between a tail grab and an indy.
Old    byerly137pro            08-28-2004, 6:03 PM Reply
A stale fish is on your heelside if your going W2W heelside right, and its a tailfish if you grab the toeside. Correct me if I'm wrong cause I've never heard of such grabs I just go to the nose or tail.
Old     (dakid)      Join Date: Feb 2001       08-29-2004, 12:41 AM Reply
you're wrong, 'cause it doesn't matter whether you're going hs or ts.

Oh yah i get it now its still the same spot, yah I see what you mean, thnx

i thought a tailfish would be right on the tail side of ur ankle on ur hs edge.
Old    r_dub            08-30-2004, 6:54 AM Reply
Try these links, this may clear this up for you.

Obviously "tailfish" and "tindy" are not listed. They are "tweaner" grabs. But this should still be able to clear up the confusion between the two.

Ancestral riders, forgive me for I have sinned: I busted a Tindy on the trampoline last night.

Anybody checked out this grab index? I like it cuz it's got the goofy version:

uh oh - that guide throws the "lien" grab in there...

now see that's interesting - that's dean lavelle's school (old-school guy), and not only does it include tindy, but method, which i was under the impression wasn't a grab, but a trick (method air). the method is a shifty with a melan grab, no?
Old     (flux)      Join Date: Jun 2003       08-30-2004, 2:04 PM Reply
I added the Tweaner grabs, because they exist. Bone out that Tindy hard for max effect.

NEWS FLA*****his wakeboarding NOT skateboarding. Who cares if the grab doesn't exist on a skateboard, I'm not riding a skateboard. If you can grab it solid ,it looks good to me. I say be inventive, try new things, don't limit your grabs because they aren't done on a skateboard. I think the coolest looking grabs are nuclear, crail, roast beef & candien bacon. I have no idea if these are skateboard grabs or not, it really doesn't matter.
