After many hours of reviewing wakeboards on teh internet and in stores, I thought I would turn to this group for suggestions. About me. I am 38 year old guy who first got up on a board last season. I will ride almost exclusively on a calm lake behind a boat, and I probably will ride most every weekend from May through September. I am still a beginner at this point, but I hope to steadily improve with experience. I am looking for a versatile board that I can ride comfortably now and will still enjoy as my jumps and tricks improve. As I often have guests at my place, I would also like something that other novice riders can jump on and enjoy - but a board that suits me is my primary concern. I have been focused on the CWB Purse with the Torque bindings or the LF Trip with the Sphynx bindings. I am under the assumption that a continuous or hybrid rocker is what I need. I am somewhat flexible on price, and I am more focused on getting a quality board I can hold on to for a while. I have looked at others - the Ronix Vault in particular. I would love to get the opinions of this group. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Final Comment - then I'll wait for comments I see great deals on the Ronix Frontier/Scout package - any thought? Are the Scout bindings pretty true to size? I wear a 10 wide shoe - not sure if I need the 10 binding or need to go up. Again - Thanks guys.

I would check out the 08 CWB Faction board and Faction bindings. Great board for all levels and it will take you though advanced level riding.

The faction does not have a center fin, correct? Any thoughts on getting a board without center fin?

I want to say to go with something more on the HYBRID side instead of a pure continuous or pure 3-stage. It seems more and more boards are adapting the characteristics of both, even the boards of pro riders who are normally purely one or the other (ex. Byerly and Murray) with that said the first thing i or anyone will say is "DEMO" but i know in some places of the world, it is hard to do that so research is the next best thing Not all "Hybrid Rockers" are labled with the word Hybrid. Some will use the word "Abrupt" "subtle" etc in addition to the rocker type. It might be safe to say that if it has any other word added to the rocker description than it could classify as a "HYBRID." However, i do know of a couple that say purely continuous or three stage but could be considered hybrid. CWB Marius is a commonly recommended board. It curves more toward the edges of the tips and tails and therefore is leaning toward a "hybrid" shape. Do to the flex of Slingshot boards I want to say the same thing. I'll look for a post i did for another kid where i tried to list all the boards that said something other than purely continuous and three stage.

most do not use a center fin now days. Center fins can be nice for beginners, especially if the side fins are very shallow (like maybe .5 inches deep) since you want a beginner friendly board, then maybe center fin is good, but in the case of the faction, the fins are longer and it will be perfect for beginers and up

I would think the chances of running into a board with really shallow side fins and no center fin option is next to impossible, so you shouldn't have to worry too much

No center fin on the Faction. If you want a board with a center fin then look at the Pure or Kink with the Torqs or Vapor bindings, great board and bindings as well. I just think the Faction/Faction setup is worth the extra 100 bucks and you get a much better binding with the Faction.

here is the list i mentioned. I will paste it here with some changes to fit your question. Please note that this list was made with more of a search to find a hybrid that was leaning more to the threestage effect. but there are still some with a lean towards continuous. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- CWB transcend http://www.wakeworld.com/boardguide/getboard8.asp?ProductID=3413 Marius http://www.wakeworld.com/boardguide/getboard9.asp?ProductID=3942 adding to the list is CWB ABSOLUTE http://www.wakeworld.com/boardguide/getboard8.asp?ProductID=3408 Gator Board's Gonzales http://www.wakeworld.com/boardguide/getboard9.asp?ProductID=4175 Hyperlite B-Side http://www.wakeworld.com/boardguide/getboard9.asp?ProductID=4223 Hyperlite Murray http://www.wakeworld.com/boardguide/getboard9.asp?ProductID=4220 one-of-a-kind-unique blended rocker. A TRUE HYBRID. Probably the most HYBRID rocker of any. Be sure to take a close look at this one!!!! Hyperlite Tribute http://www.wakeworld.com/boardguide/getboard9.asp?ProductID=4234 Liquid Force Lyman http://www.wakeworld.com/boardguide/getboard9.asp?ProductID=3989 FOUR fins Liquid Force Witness http://www.wakeworld.com/boardguide/getboard9.asp?ProductID=4017 Obrien Valhala http://www.wakeworld.com/boardguide/getboard9.asp?ProductID=4321 Obrien Vice http://www.wakeworld.com/boardguide/getboard9.asp?ProductID=4324 Ronix Covin http://www.wakeworld.com/boardguide/getboard9.asp?ProductID=3901 Ronix frontier http://www.wakeworld.com/boardguide/getboard9.asp?ProductID=3909 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- from a RESEARCHING point of view the board i would recommend the most is the 2008 Hyperlite Murray F.Y.I. I have Never ridden ANY of these boards personally, i simply recommended them based on simple research. get some opinions about ones that interest you and try to demo if at all possible. Sorry if i gave you too many choices. its simply a list of "hybrids" or what resemble hybrids. From personal experience the only board I could recommend that i have ridden is the slingshot response. it is not a "hybrid rocker" but the flex of the board changes so much of the boards performance as compared to other boards that the rocker could possibly be considered "hybrid" as i mentioned above. It might be more slippery than you want for beginners especially, but then again i have had the opportunity of teaching one person to ride on one and he did fine, but he had a snowboard background sooo... Flex boards are relatively new and increasing in popularity. if you get a chance test one out to see if it is something you would enjoy. }

Great advice - I have been staring at the Faction for some time. It seems the Faction bindings are top notch - the board just scared me a bit. I want something a beginner can ride, but I will be riding most often, and my concerns come first. Something about the CWB boards - I just like them - but others with more experience can persuade me otherwise.

I see you mention the Ronix Frontier - I have seen a great price on the 2007 with the Scout bindings - any thoughts? Teh Slinshots have really caught my attentions as well - they just scare me a bit as being too advanced - but they do seem to be making a big impact on the market.

CWB is top of the line, they have some of the best boards and bindings on the market IMO. Dont let the Faction concern you , it is a very beginner friendly shape that a beginner to and advanced rider can ride and love. If you can, take one out for demo and see what you think.

Inno - with respect to the Faction - was the 2008 a significant improvement over the 2007 - the 2007s seem to be pretty deeply discounted

another note about the faction and fins and skill levels: again the fins are deep and will make up for the loss of the center fin. Pretty much ALL boards have side fins now because they allow more control while on edge. When on edge the center fin is hardly in use. The stats on the faction say "Intermediate - Advanced" I realize this my scare you, but in my personal opinion. Intermediate could be defined as "Day 2 riding"- like a beginner could use a beginner board for the first day and immediately hop on another board the next day or earlier. a "beginner" board wont help a person get up any better than a pro board. A "beginner" board MAY help a beginner feel more confident with their edges and turns on the first day is about it... I usually recommend people buying a board that allows progression to "ADVANCED" or "PRO" vs a "beginner to intermediate" board, just because the advanced board will allow for more options. BUT these are just my opinions.

Same shape as the 08, but the 08 has a new Fabric material top sheet thats pretty cool, but other then that its the same shape. Now the 08 Faction Bindings are different then the 07 Faction Binding, they made big improvements in 08 with the 6inch plate (1lbs lighter per binding) and the reverse hinge.

I can get the 2007 Faction with the 07 Faction hinge binding for just over $300. Sound pretty good? If I am a size 10 wide foot - should I get the large binding?

Sounds like a great deal, Ya I would go large if you are a size 10 WIDE. The 138cm board is good for up to 170lbs The 144cm board is good for 150 and up.

I am looking at Boaters Outlet - $319 plus funny - the Faction was my initial choice - then I considered everything under the sun, and I am back here again. I was sold on the Kink or Pure - time tested shapes, but i guess it is time for something new

But - back to Jeremy's point - why not go with the Transcend? is that too much board for a newer rider?

You can get an 07 Transcend with the 07 Faction binding for about $350 - seems to be a bargain? What do you think?

David, I am pretty much sold on the Transcend as my next board, but I don't remember people usually putting it in the 'beginner' category. Because I have not ridden either of them, this is all 2nd hand opinion, but I think the Faction might be more stable and 'forgiving' as you and your crew are learning the basics. That said, my first board was NOT a beginner board, and I learned on it just fine. But if I had started with a nice continuous rocker, I think I would have progressed faster instead of becoming the heelside hero that I have been trying to undo for the last couple of years.

I am a heelside hero already - LOL - great point Loren - I think you are right - the Transcend seems to be pretty advanced, and at age 38, I do not want to kill myself trying to get it under control. I catch enough edges as it is.
