Or, if you had your choice of boat (for wake quality only), what would it be?
The best wake I've experienced was from an '04 X-Star (not sure how much ballast), however, if I had my choice boats, I'd probably get an '06 X-1.

wake.. for what? do you mean stock or optimized with eleventy-eleven pounds and wake wedgies? really a silly question unqaulified.

for surf it's hard to beat Centurion or other similarly "V"d boat, for wakeboarding-depends on riding style. MC is nice, 'Bu is nice also. come to think of it none of them are "bad". 'skaters have different needs. Rail grinding lunies swear by cables or jetskis. the permuations are endless.

Keep in mind local conditions come into play. you need a good 15-20 ft under the keel for a decent wake and rivers behave differently than lakes.

For most:
#1 is your boat
#2 is you buddies boat
#3 is some other boat you feel the need to pay homage to.
Take the sarcasm as read.

I can't believe there is even a question of #1. If you haven't ridden behind a sac'd out 210 then you should vote. Yes it is steep and that is what makes it nice. It is the reason people buy the 210, because trust me it isn't for the room.
As for number 2 and 3 it is the VLX and Xstar (x1 now). Just my opinion.

I have ridden behind most with added ballast except the Sanger. I have to say
#1 by FAR - My current 06 WS 23LSV with 900 extra, front, mid, rear, and wedge all the way down.
#2 - my old X2 with 1200 extra/
#3 - 06 Xstar with 1400 extra

I know this is a very personal thing but I am totally in awe of the LSV wake with even a little additional weight in the rear
Old     (jcv)      Join Date: Oct 2005       07-18-2006, 8:28 AM Reply
Jeremy, is it mandatory for everyone to like a steep wake?

My list:
1) '05 VLX (and yes, it was my favorite BEFORE I owned it)--easy wake to charge at with still plenty of kick at the top; super clean and big no matter what you do to it; wide wake makes for floaty w2w tricks at 80+'; doesn't require a lot of extra weight; prefer more sacs over the wedge, but the wedge is awesome when all you've got is stock ballast and a small crew

2a) '03 X-2--most versatile wake ever; no one, regardless of skill-level or style has ever had a bad word to say about it; takes a little extra weight to firm it up and make big, but it's AMAZING when dialed in

2b) '02 SAN/'00 Super Sport--more user friendly than people give it credit for; not ready for "the wall"? Don't add ballast (by far the best unweighted wake I've ridden); big guy having trouble punching through the peaky lip? Add ballast in the bow for a solid kicker with a firm, rounded lip; you'd be stupid to ever have more than 2500 lbs. of ballast; landings could be better...I seemed to find the canyon trough no matter how far out I rode

3) '04 X-Star--if I had the means and the desire to sack out a boat with 3500+ lbs. everytime I rode, I'm not sure I'd choose any wake over a new X-Star; BIG, rampy, solid, smooth wake that rewards good technique (it doesn't steal any of your horizontal or vertical pop); it does punish you if you get lazy and let off your edge; it needs to be said that the boat NEEDS A LOT of extra wake; riding one with stock ballast doesn't cut it

Jeremy, I don't like the steepness of the wake. I like something with a smoother transition. My knees were sure to go if I was to continue riding behind my buddies nauty. I wish I did like it more because they are the sexiest boats out there.

3. MB B-52 V23 (stock ballast over 2000lb!!!)

john, with just stock ballast, you think the newer x-star had a better wake than a '05-'06 ('04 was the old hull) vlx? that's a first. i think the x-star may be the best wake in wakeboarding, but only if you sack the crap out of it (atleast 3000 lbs.); with stock ballast, you may as well be riding behind an outboard

Hey jonny (midwesty),
Excuuuuuse meeeee!! I will start checking with you and make sure that I am qualified to make a post before I do so next time.

I test drove pretty much every boat in the lists above and I liked the Sanger V210 the best due to the wake and price. The dealer sucks here so I ended up with my second choice based on the dealer and overall repuation of the boat. I don't run around taking pictures of the perfect wake off my boat, I am to busy working and using the boat. No one has complained about the wake of my SAN so far. Since my riding sucks the stock ballast system is more than adequate for me. When i get good enough where the stock wake is no longer enough I will add more weight but until then I'm happy and that is all that matters! I guess I should have bought a Sky Supreme so I would be qualified to make a comment.

Everyone on this forum knows that MB makes the best boat and wake anyhow.

Kind of a tough question for some of us who were/are still learning WHILE riding different boats, weighted differently..............

Favorite wake/setup (-so far-) is Buzz's-weighted 05 VLX at SanV.......but I've enjoyed riding them all, once I adjusted to them.

Ah, yes........The advantages of knowing -just- enough to adapt!......

I haven't been lucky enough to ride many of those wakes, how does the BU247 compare? It is the biggest of the 3 v-drives I have owned ( '01 Kamberra/Santera, 01 Epic S22) and the wake is very easily adjusted with the 4 ballast tanks and the power wedge. I know for surfing it is the shizzle. My wife and kids fear the wake for boarding, even with no ballast. Is the VLX similar?

Jonny,
Not really, I figure any boat that gets you out there is a good boat. For me it's about having a good time. With the Nautique I don't have to ever worry about the boat which is a huge deal to me since I really can't afford a lot of repairs.

I know I can be an ass sometimes on these boards but I don't think anymore than anyone else, I just don't understand why people have to single me out and go after me. In reality if anyone on this board needed help, I would be one of the first people to step up and help out on whatever or where ever I could. I bought my boat so that I could meet people, have fun and have good times with my friends, old and new. I work my butt of to pay for my boat and you are right if you think I am biased towards Nautique. I am since Correct Craft and Sanger are the only family owned boat companies that will stand behind their boats, do the right thing and most important for me conduct business in a Christain manner, unlike the boat company that I dealt with before. For anyone that is buying a boat I would suggest that they read "Parting the Waters", it's the story of Correct Craft. For all you reading this and laughing go ahead keep head hunting, I kind of like the attention! Half that MB thread is about me which I think is pretty funny.

Rant over!

Bocephus, You said that Nautique does business in a Christian manner but you eluded to the fact that MB does not. I find it odd that on the front page of MB's webpage they state their mission and it is

By God's grace, maintain a dynamic, growing business with a Christian impact by developing, marketing and manufacturing quality products, which perform as they should and enrich the lives of those who use them throughout the world.

Not trying to start stuff again just found this interesting.

2- X-2(or old X-Star) 1200lbs in each locker and an extra 1000lbs in the walk thru

3- Old WakeSetter with as many bags as a human could possible cram in the Boat(I've ridden several comps with this set-up and the old WakeSetters throw an awesome wake once tweaked out)

Of course, I'm a little biased in my opinions :-)

1200 in each locker huh.... I'd venture to say that an X2 with 2400lbs in the back would sink nearly immediately. I'd say X2/X1 with around 500 in each rear locker (including factory ballast) and about a thousand in the front (again, including factory ballast) gets it pretty ballpark.

Definitely the best shape IMO. But I may be biased (since that's all I ride behind).

I like a little more vert to the wake, so the more weight in the back of an X-2 the better. And, unfortunately, I have seen worse than 2400lbs in the rear lockers...I don't think they sink but I'm sure it is a pain in the rear having to pickle your engine every time the odd wake washes over the bow and has you floating at the rails :-(

I didn't read everyone's reply, but like J-Rod's quote the best,"I think the gnarliest wake is produced by the SANTE or new 210, it's just not my style."

I guess I would say that I agree, except it's exactly my style.

Went out behind a buddies MC X45 with 12 peops on board yesterday, kind of expected a washed out wake with a big ramp and not much kick...WRONG. I was riding at 75'/25mph the wake was clean both toeside and heelside, nice ramp with a great lip on top to boot you up in the air. I tend to like a steeper wake and this really worked for me. Reminded me a bit of my Waterski jump days. We had some great riding and everybody commented on how nice the wake was. I liked it much better than the X-star I rode last year but that might be due to the setup, not necessarily due to the boat. Of course I like my Nautique 211 wake because it's what I ride about 90% of the time.

Well there are really a lot of wakes I really like and only a few I don't.This list is in no particular order but the 1st one ofcorse.

My X2,Kevin Pothier's 04' X-star,Jeff Frew's SAN and a "pre-production" EPIC.

Few wakes I'm not a fan of are centurion and Malibu wakes.Still yet to ride behind a dumped 05'-06 VLX but rode a few with extra 500lbs and didn't like it.Wasn't bad but wasn't good.

Ed, let us know when you will be passing through Bakersfield, I'll give you a pull behind a VLX that you will love.
