Does anybody else ride behind an outboard or am I the only one?

I ride behind my friends 15 footer, but he just sold and got an 18 footer so hopefully that will have a bigger wake. My dad is going to probaly buy an '06 air nautique sometime next year.

Yes I do, its cheap, reliable, and paid for.
No monthly payments = lots of money for gas

This thread dabbles in the issue

Same here, it's always been outboards for me. I still love riding. I just can't get too technical (can't stay in the air long enough)

I ride behind a fish ski sometimes and a malibu other times. It is always interesting switching back and forth

Check out the video #1 on this page, under Event Photos and Video. The first part of the video is Andzei Matsukevitz. He is an exchange student from Estonia.
He is 17 y.o., and he goes back in a few days. In Estonia, he rides behind a 90 HP outboard on an aluminum fishing boat which has been modified with a tower. The point is that you can learn a lot of wakeboarding behind an outboard. He rips!

I ride behind a 90hp outboard and cant do much more than surface tricks and 180's, but its probably more cause i suck than cause the wakes small

we got a 1974 Evinrude 135 hp on a 16 ft Checkmate hull...i ride with my boss from work sometimes though, he has a 2004 Wakesetter XTI23 and another friend of mine has a 2005 SAN. wish i could have full access to one of their boats but we still end up having to ride behind the outboard. major adjustments have to be made when switching from my boat to one of theirs.

I did this weekend, and do other times if im in a pinch. 24' pontoon with a 50. I can have fun behind anything!

That video of Matsukevitz is pretty impressive.

The boat/hull design is the main wake factor and some older boats i.b/o.b. throw a nice wake with strategic sacs and tweaks. Throw a tower on and you got a decent ride.

Yes It is a massive adjustment to get behind a true wakeboard boat but I find it harder to adjust to a different board than a different wake. I dragged my boards to Mexico and all over Europe last month but it was worth it.

I have a 2004 17' Glastron with a 125 hp Mercury outboard. Added two bullet fat sacks - one in the back locker and one in the floor ski locker, plus changed to a Mercury five blade SS prop to counter-act the added weight. Wake is pretty decent, plus it much firmer now. Will post pictures of wake later.

my g/f is the only person whom i know has a boat, 16ft. 1980 Invader, so we ride behind that as much as we can...(i wish i could afford a newer boat, but you take what you can get..

i'm not sure but i think putting a fatsac in the back would sink the poor thing...it has no wake really...

I do, in Hawaii, I want a new Malibu, but I don't have the heart to put it in the Salt Water. I'll wait till I move back to the mainland to get a real boat. But, this little baby is fun for the salt water. When I throw some ballast in it, it actually makes an OK wake.

Here is a picture of the wake behind my 2004 17 ft Glastron. This was with 2 bullet fat sacs, my wife and daughter in the boat. The wake gets much better when we add a couple of adults in the boat. Luckily my friend has a Supra with an extended pylon that I also ride behind.

not bad at all!

we were at the delta for the 4th of july weekend. we saw someone wakesurfing behind an outboard.

please tell me you're not as daring (or stupid) as the people we saw at the delta. it can't be good if you fall forward.

No wakesurfing behind my boat, though my friend who has the Supra is thinking about starting due to an ankle injury thats keeping him off the wakeboard. Because I ride in both my boat and the Supra, I also miss the big swim platforms when going out on my boat. Thinking about designing one for my boat during the off season that will work with the outboard.

My friend has a Grady White with custom made sky pole. He is sponsored by ten-80 and his friend from Texas was trying blind judges off the double ups.

I ride behind my '71 Tahiti (18') with a 200 HP Merc. It doesn't throw-off the biggest wake, but it's fast and most importantly, it's paid for!

Here are some pics from 1999 behind a weighted Glastron with a 140 HP Johnson Outboard using a 6 ft. homemade wooden pylon of a person I know.

I have a 1989 17ft Maxum, with i yam 140, its not too bad, anybody tell me whats the best prop to use, and can you get one of those wedges for an outboard?

I consulted with Mercury before buying the Mercury High Five SS prop. My outboard wide open RPM range is 4750 to 5250 and I had to pick a prop that would stay within that range. Going down 1" in pitch adds 250-300 rpm to the motor. Going from a 3 blade to a 4 or 5 blade prop subtracts 100-150 rpm. I went from a 3 blade 21 pitch to a 20" pitch 5 blade SS and the WO RPM ended up at 5150. I only lost about 5 MPH off my top end (52 to 47), but I gained a much stronger hole shot even with the added fat sac weight. I didn't really see a difference in the wake when changing the prop, it just gave me the ability to add more weight. You should get your outboard's wide open RPM range and your current WO RPM before choosing a new prop.

cheers for the advice, the reason i ask, is because, when i load up the back end of the boat, it ends up sitting on its backside for quite a while while pulling off with a skier in tow, and the 140 yammy should be more than powerful enough to get on the plane

jayazz,

If all your weight is in the back of the boat, try shifting it more centrally or towards the front. This will dramatically help your boat get on plane much faster. I have a 20.5ft '94 Cajun/200HP Johnson and I put about 1200lbs. with 1/2 the weight in the bow and half towards the back. I'll get a pic of the wake next time I go out to post ... I noticed immediately that my wake was cleaner when I distributed the weight equally throughout the boat.

Also,
I have a 115 2 stroke Yamaha and I put a four blade 16 on it. It blasts out of the water now...even loaded with ballast and 6 people. That Yamaha will pull hard if you prop it right.

180BR Searay with 135hp outboard, Monkey Bar tower by BI, 500lbs in the bow and 500 in the rear, with a High 5 stainless prop. Ran this for 3 years and it made a great wake- nice and rampy. the High 5 prop helped a ton for getting out of the hole to plane.

Just upgraded to a 99 Malibu Response with a titan tower.

Any of you outboard guys interested in a Monkey Bar - 1 1/2 seasons old? $600 new, looking to get $350 out of it. Its a great setup for an outboard.

the boat i ride behind in the winter is a 1978 ebbtide 16' with a mercury 70 outboard, it puts out a better wake than you'd think..i'll get a pic if i can remember next time i'm out behind it which is only when we take the good boat out in mid october

I have a four blade 16 pitch on my 04 yamaha 115 2-stroke. It's a polymer prop that is stiffer than aluminum! It's made by Pro-Pulse and it rocks for yammys. The nice thing too is that you can adjust it with the turn of four bolts. It goes from 16-21 pitch and is super easy to adjust. I found out about it from another wakeboarder here that raved about it.

we run a F80 Yamaha four stroke on a 16 footer bowrider. couple of fat sacs in it an it digs a great wake. with the 13.25x17" prop the riders stand up like behind a big boat...
