Has anyone ever been to Lake Powell in May? We usually go in July and the water is always so nice and warm. We have the chance to go in May this year and I was wondering with the water levels so high, is the water going to be cold in May. I have little kids and was just wondering if the drive from SoCal would be worth it.

Thanks,

-Tom

"cold" is a subjective thing.

it will be hitting the 60's but not the 70's
depends on what part of May. bring what neo-prene you have. heater shirts would be nice at least in my opinion
We have an above average snow pack which should bring the lake up about 35ft from current level. Castle Rock cut (if it influences your trip) is very low now but it should be back up and useable soon as the run-off comes in. The next week or two the temp should rise slowly due to the cold water runnoffs and the late spring cold spells.

check the data bases too super helpful info there

Powell in May is usually pretty awesome and both times I have done trips there in May the water temp as around 65. Most kiddos can actually stand much colder water temps then adults so I think you will be fine. I would bring a heater top for yourself though. Best part about doing the trip in May is that the lake is a lot less crowded and you can basically find fingers and coves where you are the only one there. Little bit of colder water is bearable when you have glass all over the place.

imho, may is hit or miss. The weather for me, on my may trips, has been less than good. Windy, and stormy. And the water is a bit cool for my tast. Im all about 100 degree weather and 80 degree water. But in all honesty, as long as you are at Powell, does anything else really matter?

Powell is a trip that is a lot of money and a lot of work, early season is not optimum conditions and can quickly turn this great vacation into a poor experience. I've always gone mid summer to early oct and have had nothing but great weather, excluding the occasional thunderstorm. I have had friends who have gone early season for their first time and will never go back due to the exp...

We've been going for the past 15 years, but like I said, we always go sometime in July and the weather is usually great, I even really like the thunderstorms. I think we're gonna pass on the May trip, there's just too much going on, kids getting out of school, work project deadlines, etc. I still think I'll shoot for a trip sometime in July or early August. Thanks, for the replies.
