I'm looking for me and my wife a boat but don't have alot of money to spend(13,000). I have been looking at Nautiques then came across an older Mastercraft Maristar v-drive and was wondering if these were good wakeboarding boats or if you guys have a better suggestion? Thanks for your opinions in advance.

What are your priorities? Roominess or wake?
Old     (eerock)      Join Date: Sep 2009       09-05-2009, 2:43 PM Reply
well.... really wake because I know I'll have to weight it down with bags and that will take up room.

a 205V or a SAN no doubt. $13k might be tough but at this time of year it might be possible

Sorry I realized you are looking for a Vdrive, can't edit the above post. It may be tougher to find one in your price range. Some of the DD boats have a very nice wake, just run a little short on interior space.

Well what about the older Mastercraft Maristar's? Are the wakes decent since they are a v-drive, with or without weight? And are the mid 90's nautiques wake decent and do they have to be weighted? thanks again

I don't know if it would be in your price range, but the CC Super Sport is the same hull as the old SAN 210 I believe.

I have a 1995 Maristar 200 VRS. It is a great all around boat. It is not intended to run in the slalom course but is it has a decent slalom wake at 32+ MPH. It does not have the best wakeboard wake I have ever riden but it is respectable with about 900 pounds and a few passengers.

+1 for Supersport.

Same except as the SuperAir for a lot of years, 1500 lbs in ballast and its a beast.

If you want a great wake I would say pass up the Maristar and look for:
Supersport Nautique
Prostar 205v
Sanger V210
Malibu Sunsetter VLX

Maristars are pretty good all-around boats, but that's why I asked about your priorities. If you wanted room, I'd recommend a bigger Maristar. Since it's wake, you might get lucky and find a Super Sport Nautique or Malibu Sunsetter VLX in your price range. Never seen a 205V in that price range. Sanger V210's are great but probably not common in your area.

CC = Correct Craft
SAN = Super Air Nautique
MC = Mastercraft

Any time boats are laid up for the winter in your area is a good time to shop.

What year are the Supersports?

1995 was the first year, not sure when they quit building them.

1996-2000 for the SSVLX. They had the model in 01 too but it had the crossover hull, not the wake hull like the older ones.

Eric, I'm surprised no one has mentioned the Barefoot Nautique. I had a 91' that was a v-drive and had a big block 454 in it. That boat has an awesome wake and it's in your price range. It's a very solid boat. Believe it or not that boat gets good fuel economy too. In fact it used about as much gas as my current 05 SAN which is a pretty efficient boat itself. I actually miss that 91'---once a month when I make the payment on the current one.

Wow.... thanks guys, so the 205v has the same hull as the SAN? or just the Air Nautique, also where is the best place to put the fat sacks and do they make a ballast system for this boat. I"m looking at a 96 Nautique Super Sport and a 205v, which would be better for wakeboarding or would both be great boats? Thanks for all of you guys help!!

The 205V is the first generation X-Star and the nautique Supersport is the same hull as the 95-2006 super airs.

Both are great boats with great wakes. The SS is a little smaller inside and will have a more vert wake.
Old     (eerock)      Join Date: Sep 2009       09-06-2009, 9:55 AM Reply
well what's going to be the best ballast system for them? I'm new and have no idea what to look for.

+1 on the super sport! I am looking for one too! Most likely you will have to plumb the ballast system yourself or just use handheld pumps. But Iwould worry about that later. Your main concern when starting is getting the right hull and u cannot go wrong with a SS or 205v. There is a 205v on here for 16,000 i think... they are awesome wakeboats as well my friend used to have one.

I have seen a couple of Supersports and one Sunsetter VLX in that price range. I have seen a few Maristars, but I have not ever seen a 205V in that range. I have a 1999 Sunsetter VLX and I like it a lot. I bought it last year in the off season, I paid well over 13K though for a 1999.

I just sold my 97 Sunsetter VLX in your price range. I loved the boat and had a great wake. You can find those for your price.

What's the difference in the LX and VLX? Ive found a few LX's but no VLX and does the LX stand up to the VLX? thanks

The V in pretty much any model name stands for v-drive. Same hull

I would also throw in the sanger V210 I would put it right there in terms of wake and i've seen a few in that price range. I've also seen some ski supreme v210's in that range but i know nothing about their wake.

Mastercraft 205V = Original X-Star hull. Still being made today, but now known as the X1. Awesome wake, not a lot of room, good all around boat.

Nautique SuperSport = Super Air Nautique hull through 2006. Another incredible wake, with minimal weight. Narrow beam that is low on room, but a great boat if you can get it for the money.

Malibu Sunsetter VLX 1996-2000 (not 2001. changed to the diamond hull that year) = Same Hull as Wakesetter VLX through 2004 IIRC. Great wake, a little more room than the first 2 boats. Cant go wrong with this one either

Sanger V210. Dont have a whole lot of knowledge on the performance on this one, but I've heard great things about it, and the ones that I have been in have been really nice.

If you can get any of these boats, in good shape and in your price range, I think you'll be really happy with any of them

I have a 99 Maristar 230VRS. I believe it is the same hull as the 98 225's. A 98 recently sold here in TX, literally two slips away from mine, for $15k in decent shape. I'm guessing with fall coming, that is the range.

I use it for wakesurfing primarily. The wake I produce isn't the best wake on the lake, but it is a LOT better than 90% of the boats I have ridden behind.

This video is with no one in the boat besides driver: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JSoOIsU4KIU before we got it dialed-in. I need to get a new video now that we know better where to put the weight.

I looked at a ton of boats before buying this one, and got it for a number of reasons, but a good wakesurfing wake was my goal. We love it.

Hey, how much weight do you guys have on which side and how fast are you going. Well would the maristar be better than a Nautique Super sport? thanks

I've been on two older Maristars and I hated them, It took A TON TON TON of weight to get anything out of it... and even then the shape was not too fun.

I am a bias owner of a supersport but 1500 lbs in our SS is better than the Maristars with 3000 lbs in them.

I have 750 in each v-drive locker, 400 in ski locker. In that video, i had another 400 across the back seat, and another 400 in the bow, with only the port locker filled.

I've sacked it out with 3000 before, and it gets even better. Pretty much everyone I've talked to who seriously wakesurfs, whether it is in the bigger boats (24's), the newer Centurion's, etc. uses 3,000+ if they are really going to try to get a killer wake.

We only use the plumbed-in 1900 when we have anyone on the boat, and get a great wake. I can't attest to the SS. The only Natique I have been in wakesurfing was a super-air 21 (not the V-drive, the direct), and wasn't good at all. Small wake, no room to move around with any ballast filled, very little freeboard seems to be a pretty reasonable amount to run with only one person in the boat.

Sanger V210 in that price range.

On the Super Sports, how hard is it going to be to find one for 15kish... How do you plumb the bags or how do you fill and drain? how rare are the Sanger's? Thanks
Old     (eerock)      Join Date: Sep 2009       09-09-2009, 10:47 PM Reply
I can't find a Sanger but what about a Tige? I found a 99 21v Riders Ed with ballast and TAPS system for 18,500. Are these good boats?
