we haven't done this in a while...thought i'd bring it back. this month's assignment is long exposure. there really are no rules except that it has to be shot outdoors when the sun is down and must be shot between 7/9 until 11:59pm pdt on 7/31. voting will be done by whoever visits the photography forum and the thread. there will be no celebrity judges. on 8/1, we'll start a new thread to vote. vote for the top 3 pics in the thread. NO HONORABLE MENTION! scoring goes like this:

1st place = 5pts
2nd place = 3pts
3rd place = 1pt

so let's say hypothetically, someone votes like this:

1. person a
2. person b
3. person c

then another person votes like this:

1. person a
2. person d
3. person b

total would be:

1. person a - 10pts
2. person b - 4pts
3. person d - 3pts
4. person c - 1pt

so, get your asses out there and shoot. post 'em in here. if you have any questions, you shouldn't. it couldn't get any simpler than this.

Why does it have to be when the sun is down? ND filters can lengthen exposure times and yield some great images!

What do you mean by "sun down?" or did you mean "sunset?"

Today's sunset was at 8:31 PM, but it was still light out.

Joe and I already had that talk. As soon as the sun itself is below the horizon anything is game... even ambient sunlight.
Old     (scott_a)      Join Date: Dec 2002       07-14-2009, 12:39 AM Reply
So two seconds is the minimum shutter speed, then?

How many pics can we submit? Like...if I submitted something now and 3 weeks from now I decided I wanted to submit a different pic instead, could I do that? What if I wanted to submit like 5 photos and go for a clean sweep of the podium?
Old     (dcervenka)      Join Date: Sep 2002       07-14-2009, 1:02 AM Reply
Did you define "long shutter?"
Old     (scott_a)      Join Date: Dec 2002       07-14-2009, 1:12 AM Reply
Wait...do shutters come in different sizes? I only got what came with my camera. How do I find out if it's a long shutter or short? Or is that what we're trying to figure out now? I'm confused.
Old     (krazywake)      Join Date: Oct 2007       07-14-2009, 1:29 AM Reply
I just flipped through my Canon manual. It didn't say anything about shutter length, only shutter speed

Kidding aside... I'd say anything that you couldn't shoot handheld without unintentional blurring should be considered long exposure. Half second maybe? I'll let Joe make the executive decision though.

Another night and yet no pics.. weird. 17 days and counting.

On a more serious note.. how many pics can we submit?

Riley what's wrong with downtown sac? From what I remember while stumbling around there a few years back after a wet Thursdays at the Delta King.. it seems like a good photo-op for urban shots.

btw - I'll see your 14mm f2.8 SF with a 10.5mm f2.8!

Sorry I didn't get a shot in. I was pretty stoked to see it was going to be a long exposure shot for the contest. I did get out to shoot one night but the fog came in in a big way and I came home without a shot.

dpc, come up w/ a new assignment?
Old     (dcervenka)      Join Date: Sep 2002       08-11-2009, 4:23 PM Reply
Cool. Thanks y'all! :-)

New assignment involves strobes (aka flashes/speedlights)

1) Minimum of one flash has to be used (duh) and no limit on the max.
2) You can only use an ordinary flash, speedlight, etc.. (sorry Riley & Ryan, but no fancy smancy ranger's, alien Bees, etc..)
3) Any light modifier is acceptable (brolly, snoots, gobos, etc..)
4) The flash can be triggered manually, remotely, CLS, etc.

I think that's about it... Let's do a 2 week time frame to keep things exciting.

How does that sound?
Old     (steezyshots)      Join Date: Feb 2008       08-11-2009, 4:28 PM Reply
WHAT! Just because you don't have some fance smancy flashes we can't use em? Lame
