pictures of the moon.

so tonight the moon is suppost to be really bright in the sky. i wanted to take a picture of it but they dont come out so great. can anyone give me some feedback on how to get a great picture of the moon. or if you would like post up some pictues of the moon and stars.

Nice composition Randy!

Use as much telephoto as you have including any TC's you've got. Start at f8 and 1/200th and keep adjusting your aperture/ISO until you get it exposed properly. If you set the camera on auto you will end up with a pure white mass and no detail.

That was shot with a 300 f2.8L + 2X +1.4X & 20D

so a 1,260 mm equivalent? Assuming the 20D has a 1.5 crop factor.

Technically it's 840mm and then you have to compare pixel density to figure out what the relationship is. The 20D had relatively large pixels so there might be no difference if you were shooting with a full frame 1Ds2 or 3 for example where as you'd get a lot of crop factor magnification with a 50D or XSi

That's an uncropped photo above, if you get a sharp shot you can get away with a lot of cropping.

Rodney- There is a lot of online info on shooting the moon. Check out AstronomyMag.com , SkyandTelescope.com . Remember that using higher powered lenses also amplifies the impurities & heat waves in the atmosphere.
