Currently have 1 pair of 4 ohm tower speakers rated to 125watts RMS, with amp that runs them at 120 RMS x2. Want to add 2 more speakers but cannot add any more wiring through the tower so I am going to run them in the parallel mode from a more powerful 2 channel amp. Since I am doubling the speaker power to 250 per channel, is it safe to assume that I should select an amp that pushes 250 RMS x 2 also. Or is there some super secret calculation that I need to know.

as long as you run the amp in stereo you will be ok, that will be a 2 ohm load per channel and most amps will run that with no problem

As long as it's a two channel amp you should be fine. If you want to use a bridged four channel amp they will need to be wired in series.
