I've got a small amount of water seeping from...

It's a very small amount and from the residue, it looks like it's been doing it for quite a while. My buddy tells me that's the water pump and this leakage means it is going to fail at some point, but maybe not immediately. Any thoughts? Thanks.

Clean it up, and make sure that the leak is coming from the weep hole in the water pump. If it IS, it's time to replace the water pump.

It looks like something I can do myself. Any tips? Where is a good source for the part?

Its definitely your water pump. The weep hole is there to indicate that failure of the pump is imminent. Its real simple to replace the pump. I believe its 4 or 5 bolts and 2 hoses. Just make sure you clean the old gasket off the engine block real well. As for the part, go to www.skidim.com They have the best prices and excellent service. Just ask for Richard or Vince and they'll hook you up. Also, the water pump they sell is supposed to have a lifetime warranty and the bearings on their pump will never fail.
