Some major shift problems happening to my wannabe wakeboard boat. Luckily, it is not due to water in the outdrive (lube always looked good). It is probably the dog clutch, pin, or shift shaft.

Anyone have an experience to share with those? Thanks for any help.

As a backup I am checking out the home equity line of credit option to buy a v-drive...but I am hesitant to pull the trigger (as Chris N. suggests)

Mercruisers, depending on which one you have.. Alpha1 or similar have problems when you overload them with weight and let's say you have the trim up too high... the "donkey spline with it up like that can strip the teeth out of it. But if it is shift problems, couple things. Does it clank in gear, or neutral? it's fairly easy to yank the outdrive off, and check the "donkey can also check the linkage for the F/N/R to see if it's loose like it's jumping around, could just need tightening.
going to a Vdrive from an I/O? probably save your money dump the boat, and find one a real Inboard... anything is better than an I/O

Sorry Tommer but a few of us I/O owners may have something to say about that statement. Funny thing, my buddie just sold his d drive moomba and said my i/o had a better wake, ride, and room then his d drive. Beware not all d drives wake shape and ride are made the same so an i/o may be an option.
Bobby what exactly is the problem, i was having a problem shifting into neutral and they finally found out the cables have too much play in them, boat is a 2001 and they should not be bad already??

The shifting problem has been fixed, and I sold the boat! I figured that the boat will never look as good to a buyer as now, so I let it go. I am looking for a V-drive now.

My shifting problems existed since I got the boat from my brother in law 4 years ago. Although he only put 35 hours on it in 5 years (it was a 1994), he was extremely dangerous to propellers. I know he even mangled an older style stainless prop. I believe that incident started the problems, since the prop did not have a break-away hub.

The problem was the engine dying when you shifted into reverse. It never happened coming off the trailer, but always once the engine was warm. After numerous attempts of shift cable replacements over the years, and the problem was getting worse, it was evident that something was wearing or very wrong with the lower gear system. The propeller shaft was pulled, and it was clear that one of the bearing was cracked and the gear had moved too far along the shaft, wearing the shaft badly.

So a new prop shaft, forward and reverse gears, and 1000 bucks later....it shifts well again.

i/o can be great wake boats, but the using them with sacs and a ton of people puts lots of strain on the drive system. Maybe the bravo drives are more robust than the alpha...but I wouldn't consider another alpha i/0 because I typically run with 8 people and lots of gear, it is smarter for me to go with a 300hp boat, made for the torque requirements. Too bad in some ways, all my experience troubleshooting would have been helpful for another i/o.

If your stepping up id suggest nothing less then a v drive, as far as the troubleshooting goes an engine is an engine, troubleshooting is the same...get a shop manual for the new ride and you in there.
