carpet on a rail?

okay, so a friend and i are talking and throwing ideas back and forth. and i have a winch spot that it would be supper easy to throw a rail in at. and he has some of that stiff indoor/outdoor carpet, would that work on the top of a rail? maybe throw some skateboard wax on it to help it slide?
anyone done or tried it?

Brave man, but It depends. It slides well at cable parks on their docks, but that is different to being pulled on it. I'd just drop the cash on some PVC at the least.

how much is pvc? never really prices it out. i just know trex is bank. and this is the first rail ill be hitting. and the first time putting one at this spot. so idk much about it

If it was the first rail I'd just go with the Trex. It's about 60 dollars for 36 feet at a foot wide at home depot, and it's the best surface you can have. DOnt cheap out on your first rail.

yea. know. i was thinking that to.

my friend who lives 2 hours away might come to winch since his lake is at 5 mph now due to low water levels. and he asked if he could bring a rail. and asked to post asking how well carpet would slide.

I strongly prefer PVC to Trex, I guess Im an oddball, but if you can get PVC cheaper than trex, its a good choice too

trex is the best for rails dont go cheap

You really don't even need to buy trex if you're trying to save money just use wood for the surface of the rail it will slide fine.

the guy im talking about doing this with. is thinking about buying some pvc pipe and going like 6 wide on it with some gaps in between just to make sure it slides.

it was originally going to be carpet though. so thats why i posted this thred

The best surface for a rail is HDPE with cutting board texture. Total Plastics carries it in 5X9' sheets. Camfer the edges, use elevator bolts to secure it in place and you have a very durable rail that does not chew up boards. Not real expensive, but you have to cut it like wood. Get gray or another color for UV resistance.

FRP is cheap and works fine. Like $29 a sheet at Lowes/Depot. Its what they used in Bent Felix on the Bank and the C rail.

PVC is a pain to work with...Haha Trex is the way to go for sure..

If the rail's going to be temporary, you'll be fine with just a wood surface, just make sure you get it wet first.

It won't last as long as trex or something similar, but it gets the job done fine.

it will only be up for 1 day.

its in the SF bay so long term wont happen.

scratch the carpet idea. i got permission from a good friend of mine to borrow his rail. itll be a real one. thanks for the advice though guys!

That's too bad that its a real one, well not really but some of the most fun I have ever had jibbing we were just making do with what was on hand. Jon Boat gab to log, Paddle boat to Cart Return Rail, Canoe to Railroad tie. you get the point. organic jibbing rules!

haha for sure, ive never hit a rail though. so im thinking a real surface will be a little better while learning how this works! organic jibbing later!
