We are pretty new to surfing and purchased our first boat last year at the end of the season. Prior to that I've surfed two friends' boats and used about 3-4 different boards. My wife and I have progressed pretty quick and some of the others who ride with us, not so much. The boat came with a Hyperlite skim board and I have no idea which model. It only has one fin and is pretty reactive, my other friends who have experience seem to like it. We also bought a Ronix Marshmallow Thrasher, it was the last board left, but it's a very boring (slow) board to ride. It feels like riding on a paddle board, so it's probably good for those trying to learn. I'm leaning toward both a Doomswell Drone and a Phase 5 Model X just so we have a few more boards in our quiver and something to progress on. Every one who rides with us is under 180lbs, so I'm thinking shorter versions of the two. Any thoughts for those of you have ridden a lot of different boards or my choices?

Ryan,

If you are looking at those sort of hybrid style models, you should consider a Chaos RacerX.
And, yes for weight of the riders you have you can look at boards in the 4'5 to 4'6 range.

Since you are getting two boards, you might as well get a true surf style board and a true skim style board. That way you have both styles. I would recommend skipping the hybrid style board like the Model X.

What 2 boards would you recommend? I am in the same situation like wagonhound.

I'd recommend a Ronix Powertail and a Phase 5 Diamond. Those are extremely popular boards and I have both. Opposites in all ways.

Thomas, I would recommend a surf style board from Doomswell, Soulcraft, or Chaos and a skim style from Victoria or Phase 5. There are a lot of different models, so so find just check out the descriptions and see what sounds best for you.

I just added the LF Sixer and Inland Surfer flyboy big boy this season and I am stoked about the flyboy and am selling the Sixer which operates in slow motion by comparison.
