"Gayl suggests using the GBU-43 MOAB — known as the “Massive Ordinance Air Burst” or “Mother of All Bombs” — which has been "proven, safe and ‘green", according to Gayl. If a MOAB is unavailable, Gayl says a Vietnam-era Daisy Cutter would also do handsomely."

I don't know if this would work or not, but my worry would be that you would fracture the well to the point there is no way to cap it.

I have been following this quite closely over the past 2 weeks. At first, to me anyway,it was just another vague crisis but this is turning into an absolute catastrophe. Especially for a lot of the people in Louisiana, Actually Louisiana itself. It seems almost inconceivable that they did not have the means in place to cap it should this occur. BP, the regulatory authorities, the whole cosy bunch should be criminally charged. BP fast tracked this thing. It was costing them $1m a day and they were 2 weeks behind. Now look where we are. Obamas not actually coming out of this smelling like roses either. Everybody is totally, and I mean totally, dependant on BP capping this thing. And all BP want to do is try and save the oil.The fox guarding the hen house.
Obviously I'm no expert, but this bomb idea appears to be fraught with danger. Imagine them rupturing the whole well? Unimaginable.

They're actually talking about detonating it in the water above the sea floor, not drilling down and then detonating it. That leaves a pretty positive chance that it would crush the pipe. The well is a couple thousand feet below the sea floor as well if I remember correctly, so it would take a lot to fracture that...
