This is about how I felt towards the end of owning mine

I am right there with you and him, I bought my daughter a used convertible 3 series for her first car after all the little crap that went wrong I found a guy who worked at a non dealer that was a BMW mechanic and he charged allot less seemed every repair was 650.00-1300.00 on the dang thing. She eventually totaled it. I then bought myself a two year old 750i and the friken doors would open when it was hot just unlatch and swing open while driving (nice Huh) and the window would roll up then down automatically and several other bs. I ended up lemon lawing my 7 series and got all my cash back but 230.00 for driving a problem for 18 months.

So Yes I know and feel the same way, also the car had been to the BMW dealer multiple times under warranty and maint. still on the vehicle and they brought in mechanics from BMW North America H.Q. and still could not figure it out.

Now its been six months and I have no idea what I want still just driving my truck until I figure it out.

Makes one wonder

Those door & quarter panels hold up pretty well to the sledge!

I would be an alternative voice to such a gross generalization. I have owned two BMW 3-series driving the first until 250,000 miles and own my second now with 155,000 on it. I LOVE my current 330i ZHP. I will likely drive it to 250,000 also (4 more years). Yes, BMW's require attentive maintenance (much of which I do on my own). My 330i has had a few finicky problems with the check engine/emissions system. But it handles like nothing I've owned, gets great mileage and fun-per-mile. Driving it has been a daily treat. That's been my experience anyway.

I was very very tempted to get a 335i but after hearing all the maintenance horror stories I ended up with my IS350. I couldn't swing one with a warranty / new.
Those wacky Germans and their over-engineering.

I have a 750li, and so far it has cost me about 8K in the year and a half I have owned it. I will NEVER Buy another one. As soon as it came out of warranty, all hell broke loose.

I really enjoyed my 08 535i for 3 and a half years, I had to unload it as the economy really tanked and my mo payment was a grand and I only owed 6 more so I had a bit of equity . Here is a funny twist, I am pretty sure I paid 51 for it, I also bought a leftover 07 Avy for 45 and put some extras on it and so I paid about the same for both. Tried selling the Beamer on my own and had a few low ballers but they all had made up their mind to buy a pre owned certified (smart move) unless I gave it away which I did not do. I sold the Avy at about the same time I wound up trading the BMW, funny part is I got 38 for the Avy and only 30 for the Beamer.

I am on my 2nd BMW 3 series, and I love the cars. Free everything but tires for the first 100k miles. I drove the last one for 250,000 miles in 5 years, and this one looks like it will be at 200,000, without a single problem. But I take it in when it asks me to, without hesitation.

We have owned a 2001 BMW 325Ci that we purchased used for some time now after my wifes Honda Civic threw a rod. We have had one issue with the water pump bearing going out which put the fan through the radiator. A few other minor issues and she runs like a champ at 175,000 miles. We plan on getting a new car at the end of the year...she likes the Mercedes C250 and C300 but i am unsure of the reliability factor....probably just get another BMW

Despite all of the horror stories, I recently bought an E39 M5, which is my favorite BMW ever. I love the body style of the E39, and I wanted something 400HP + with a stick for a fun weekend car, and just a break from the truck when I needed it. I found this 2002 with only 66K miles. All stock, and in great shape with just a couple of minor fixes needed. I feel like I got a lot of car for the money. I have 3000 miles on her so far. Crossing my fingers that she continues to play nice. It's a blast to drive.

I had tons of problems with mine when I had it. I'll never buy another one.

E39 M5 is the only M5 I'd consider either... timeless.

Ex E46 owner here. I actually loved mine. I picked it up for about 15k when it was like 7 years old. It did have some issues, but no more than the Accord I had a few months before getting it. The parts costed more than a Honda part, but not by much. It was still easy enough to work on.
The only reason I don't have it to this day is because I hit black ice and spun it out into a ditch pretty bad that totaled it. Otherwise I would still be driving it. It was one of the best cars I've ever owned.

Now I just drive a cash paid 76 F150 that doesn't look that great and leaks a little bit, but drives great, hauls whatever, and tows boats just fine. No car payment, and I just stepped off my high horse of needing something new and flashy and bought something old, cheap, and practical to get whatever I could ever need to get done. It gets better mpg than my 2009 work van with a smaller engine too!

I have an 07 335i and absolutely love it! No problems and it is decently modded (exhaust, chipped, downpipes, DCI). It hauls some a** and it's a sharp looking car.

My family has owned over 7 BMW's and we absolutely love them. With that being said, we have a 1999 Lexus LS400 with over 230,000 and it's never seen the shop other than for regular maintenance. BMW's are great, but there are other great manufacturers out there as well.

My wife drives an x3 with a 6speed manual trans. It's an '06 with almost 100k and we have had no issues (knock on wood). We have had 2 BMWs a VW and an Audi. Love the German cars! I hope to own a E39 M5 some day #dreamcar. Can't beat my suburban Z71 for hauling kids, gear, boats etc...Name: ImageUploadedByTapatalk1385055078.057814.jpg

I have a 97 540I M-Sport that has 140K on it and never had a major problem besides the brakes. They work fine but the brake dust is terrible even with the ceramic pads. Besides that it has been a great grocery getter and the V8 with the 6 speed manual is a blast to drive. Beats the heck out of driving the F250 that gets 12-14 MPG.

Had an '03 530i from 30,000- to 145,000 miles. No issues.

Had an '05 330ci ZHP from 4,500 miles to 55,000 miles. No issues + Free maintenance and brake pads. I did go through a few pairs rear tires. (Paid 39,000, Sold for $32,000)

I had a couple of e46 M3s, got both with very low miles on them (convertible with 3k, coupe a few years later with 5k). Loved both. Would never want to own one out of warranty.

More partial to Audi these days, but none of these big heavy current cars are all that much fun to drive. Finally drove a Model S the other day, and it's a very cool car but also not very fun. Hoping the new NSX is

Nice to have for a Sunday drive. But 256 horsepower is hardly thrilling these days.

soul means does more for me than speed so older bmws are favorites of mine, although the e82's are lovely...

Best place to look before you invest your hard earned cash is on the edmunds website service bulletin section. I had an 08 Mercedes e350 that had over 76 service bulletins on the website. I think mine developed atleast 20 of the listed problems. Alot of japaneese cars I looked up on the website have less than 10 service bulletins.
