If the factory does not install a transom remote... I was just wondering if there are any tips when cutting holes into fibreglass/gelcoat... to avoid spider cracking and flaking etc...

I put pop up cleats in my old boat and you could see some minor cracks in the gel coat...

Can you avoid this?

start with a small drill bit and work your way up.
drill slow. (don't build up any heat)
tape off the area to avoid chips.
don't over tighten your mounting screws/bolts to avoid cracks.

tape off the area, run the drill in reverse, chamfer edges of the hole

I'll second taping off and running the drill in reverse. Even doing both of these steps though, you might still get some cracks. Good luck!

I would also use a new bit. Tape over the area with masking tape.

tape area, use hole saw drill and reverse speed. Go very slowly. I did this to the back of my boat and had no problems with cracking. If I remember correctly 1" 7/8 or 2" hole saw did the trick. Mine was for a circle clarion.

You should also countersink the hole to prevent spider cracks.

Thanks for the tips... I contacted the factory with my request... so as long as their stereo supplier will get them a Sony Y-adapter for the LCD remote... they will install one in the transom for me!
