I need your help in making the best choice I can for a boat. It would be used mostly for wake boarding but wouldn't have to throw more than a novice wake. I live in Alberta and don't get to go out much. No one in the family is going to the X games. I would like to be able to surf too but don't want a bunch of sacs all over the floor. Something with built in ballasts sounds nice.

Are there V drives out there for under 20k that aren't beat to hell or worn out? Are older V drives reliable? Would I be better off forgetting the surfing and look for a DD that might not be as old or tired? But still a DD with a hull designed to throw a wake and ballasts.

Any specifics to look for or stay away from? How many hours on an engine before it starts to get scary?

Thanks much for the help.

I bought mu 97 nautique supersport for sub 20k. Guy on planetnautique just did last week for less than 20k. They are out there just gotta decide what you want.

Look for nautique super sports, mastercraft 205v or maristar vrs, malibu sunsetter ect

What your looking for can be had..you just have to look for it. As Vdrives are getting older and older more are dropping below that 20K mark. Your going to probably be in that 1996-2000 year range.

I could Google my brains out and find some options for my budget but if I don't if what I'm looking at is crap then what's the point. Was hopping that people who have owned would be kind enough to point me in the right direction or at least help to keep me from buying crap. If I know some brands models years to look for then google I go.
Thanks.

There should be literally at least 10 threads this year of the exact nature. On a google search they should pop up. Not trying to be sarcastic, seriously google it. Lol

Thanks. I'll have a look.

One thing that might not be as easy to find though - to surf behind a an older V drive are built in ballasts enough on some boats or do you always have to use extra sacs?
Old     (brichter14)      Join Date: Jul 2010       02-26-2014, 7:39 PM Reply
We surf my supersport. No bags on the floor. Just a 750 in each vdrive locker and 680 in ski locker. Have ppl sit on surf side.

But ps. Surfing is boring.

Do some DDs have enough space to hide enough sacs to surf? Haven't tried surfing but might be fun for some.

Very few DD in your range are going to have anywhere to hide enough weight to surf. Some have a rear locker that will hold one sac but thats not going to be enough. You need a V drive with the large rear compartments to hide the big sacs.

If you're going sub 20k you're going to have to do some work to the boat. you may not have auto ballast plumbed in you may not have perfect pass. but these things are each affordable add ons you can do yourself. You do not need to have above floor ballast to surf a Vdrive. it can all be hidden in rearlockers/skilocker/under seats/underbow but having some out on top if you dont have enough friends is always helpful.

late 90s early 2000's

Malibu Sunsetter VLX (2001 was the diamond hull stay away from that if you dont ski) You may be able to find a wakesetter in you're range... its the same hull
Mastercraft Prostar 205V/Xstar. - wrap around seating didnt start til 2000
Nautique Supersport/SAN - This wake is the most vertical wake you can get. you really should ride behind each one then decide b/c while the Bu and MC are very similar the Nautique is its own beast. And i think the Bu surf's the best of the 3.

Thanks. That helps a lot. Does seem like V drives under 20 are hard to find. Especially something in decent shape. If I don't care so much about surfing I might be better off with a DD that was designed to throw a decent wake? An older Air Nautique?? Or something similar?
Old     (jhartt3)      Join Date: Jan 2012       02-27-2014, 7:26 AM Reply
the non V versions of all of these boats are the same hull. so a nautique sport, or a Sunsetter LX or a Mastercraft 205.

Not wanting to surf does not really affect Vdrive vs non Vdrive. Its mainly the space requirements. I picked up a 99 SSVLX for 14.5k earlier this fall so the deals can be had but you will look longer and have to be more patient for sub 20k vdrives.

But space is the main issue even adding ballast for wakeboarding is better in a Vdrive b/c either side of the engine is under the sun deck so you can hide it there rather than it being on the floor of the boat. Older well maintained boats will standup well there is a reason these boats still cost 20k. or more.

Thanks. That does look nice. 1000 plus hours isn't too many? I also saw this and was curious what you think of this brand for a budget.

Frsnrth other than the rat's nest of wiring to the amps, this boat does look to be pretty well maintained and a fairly decent deal, especially with the sacs already in the trunks. If you're interested I'm working out of south Louisiana on an offshore rig right now, and will be headed up towards the Baton Rouge area when I come back in on the 13th. I could possibly swing by and take a look at this boat for you if you like. Might be worth the drive for you if it's clean enough.

i wouldnt get the moomba. and 1000 hours is about half what most consider alot. 2000 hours is alot. I just bought a 99 with 850 hours and i'm not concerned. I only use my boat as a sport boat on a smaller lake where i dont have to drive to a "spot" so i avg 30-50 hours a year and i would say i use it alot from march thru november 3-5 times a week weather dependent.. i also ride with another couple people so we use their boats sometimes. key in the on position running the hour meter sometimes drives up hours with out the engine running.

I've ridden behind a buddies DD moomba. we never take the boat out anymore. we rode my Hydrodyne grandsport or our buddies SAN this year it will be the VLX and the SAN.

I have a DD Supra launch 2002 it throws a good wake for "boarding" and "skating" has a factory hard tank under the rear seat and plumbed ballast in the rear locker and under the playpen area. We even Surf with it, but we are not that good at it yet. I see tons of DD boats that will throw plenty good enough wake for the average rider w/o bags all over the floor. You can get these boats for relatively cheap and are a good quality boat that is super easy to work on if needed. I wouldn't pass on them just due to the DD layout..

I also have a supra launch dd... Makes a great surf and wakeboard wake.

Thanks much for all the info. I won't have the cash for the boat until end of March or so. I'm just trying to look at the options so I'll be ready to buy. Seems like if I look enough I should be able to find a decent V drive in my budget. I'll let u know when I'm ready in case someone here has what I want.

I know of a centurion avalanche down here in North Carolina for 17500. I haven't talked to the guy in a while but I don't think he sold it yet. The only problem with it for you Canadian guys is it's got the American Flag down the side of it. I'll try and find some pictures of it.

I am not sure how that Avy would go over up in Canada. Haha

I would contact the guy above with the Tige 2100V. There are some downfalls of those boats but I think the positives outweigh the negatives. Here is the link to his boat. http://spokane.craigslist.org/boa/4333564059.html

Negatives:
Spray pockets=a little wash on the wake but from people I have talked to it is mostly cosmetic and won't matter to a beginner to intermediate rider.
Overall Quality=some say it wasn't great but I am not sure it was that much worse than anything else in the early 2000's. If it has been maintained and repaired whatever.
Tower=quite possibly the worst tower in the history of wakeboard towers. That said if it isn't broke than whatever. Just know it may have to be replaced at some point.
No internally plumbed ballast=this is a bummer but the fact is most internal ballast's in boats in the sub 20k range sucked to begin with. You might be better designing and installing your own custom version.

positives
-Large boat-Huge amounts of space compared to other boats of it's era. I believe they had a 102" beam which was unheard of at the time. Will blow away the Nautique supersports/SANs, 205V/Xstars and VLX's for interior space and storage.
-Deeper V=better rough water ride and easier to list for surfing.
-TAPS=you don't need ballast, just as the Tige salesman. J/K. It is nice though for getting on plane, rough water ride and adjusting wake characteristics.
-this particular boat has stargazer=up to date speed control. Nice.

Other Vdrives you might be able to find and are worth looking at besides the often mentioned SAN, 205V and VLX are the Centurion Elite V, Moomba Mobius V, Mobius LSV/Outback V/Outback LSV, Kamberra, Sanger v210, Calabria ProV(I believe there is one for just over 20k at pacific Nautiques in the Seattle area), Tige 21V, Mastercraft MAristar 210/230, etc... I am sure I missed a couple options.

For Direct Drive I would consider Supra launch/sunsport, Malibu wakesetter/sunsetter LX, Tige 22i and the Mastercraft 209/X9. I actually really like the features of the X9 vs the others. It is a wide direct drive boat and almost 21' long. The rear seat base lifts up and makes a huge sunpad like a vdrive which also allows for a gihugeous bag to be plumbed into the rear.

There is also this boat in a Salt lake city. There aren't any pics and it must be the first year of the Avalance but great price. I would check into it.

Absolutely! and Absolutely! It's not uncommon to see well over 1,000 hours on these boats.

I just picked up a 1997 Hydrodyne Nexstar V-Drive boat, in pretty decent condition, 720 hours for $9,400 FOR A V-Drive!!! It needs a tower and Ballast system added, but I'll still be under 12K by the time I add all that. I looked for about a year before I bought one. Plenty of nice late 90's V-drives for less than 20K. My preference would be an old Sanger V-210, but I couldn't pass up the price on the Hydrodyne.

Good luck with your search!, and remember to be patient.
