Canon 14 mm F 2.8 Fisheye

Has anybody played with this lens?

I think I want to rent it to go on a 1D Mark 3 for a trip to the Phillies...

Any input?

I think I may go with the Sigma 15 2.8 instead...

It's a fun wide angle in my experiences. I already own the Canon 15mm fish and it's my favorite lens, but I did rent the 14mm (non-fish) a few times back when we had this winch spot goin on...

14mm is just a straight wide angle but should be plenty wide enough on the 1D3.

Heck I think 17-18mm is plenty wide on mine!

What is the primary use of a fish eye lens? Is there a use for someone that doesn't really shoot a lot of boarding and/or sports?

Architecture, and just something different for anything you shoot.

What about for old dudes like me that shoot mainly their families and such? Do you have any cool pics of using a fish eye for stuff like that? I am considering buying a fish eye lens but an struggling to think of uses for one.

Rob- Fisheye lenses are pretty niche lenses with little value to most people. Personally, I'd rent a few different lenses until you find one that fits your needs. And there's always flickr.com to use as a resource to see what people are shooting with their fisheye. Just start searching around. I've done that a few times, actually...kind of useful.

If you are using a Canon crop body, the EFS 10-22 is a great lens. On the 10 side it has a nice , now too much, fisheye and a little above that it is a great wide angle.

(I know it won't work on the 1D3, I was just posting a suggestion for others reading the thread)

I used to have a 16mm 2.8 fisheye and I found lots of great uses for it with family pictures. Some of my favorite architectural pictures are with Fisheyes too. Just search "fisheye" on the flickr homepage and you can see some great examples. It can be difficult to create original style though because the lens naturally lends itself to the stereotypical fisheye pics.

Yeah Rich Architecture! I have seen some sick Architecture shots done with fisheyes, in fact I have taken some sick Arch sots with fisheyes.

Thanks David! I got everything added onto my homeowners insurance just in case, I'm trying to pick up that dakine backpack, and praying that all my strobes show up in Manila after the mind boggling trip time we have!
