best time frame for promoting a video

How long before a video's release do think is a good time to start promoting it.

I've been filming the last 2 years (for a skimboarding video) and am beginning the final editing but don't want to fall into the trap of of promoting it too much before it's ready. (I'm basing this theory off of videos that I've looked forward to but lost interest in by the time they're released)

I think it would depend on where it is being promoted, and how. take for example, the Chick Flick. it was being promoted months ago. I cant even remember when I first heard about it. it is talked about so much on here, that I still am anticipating the release. I think it also depends on if you plan on doing a pre-order for it.
