I currently have an 08 supra 21v around 200 hrs on it. I really like the boat but would like to get something a bit bigger. I have found an 08 malibu 23lsv with around 600 hrs on it. Boat seems to be in great shape and includes options like powerwedge and full ballast. Both boats have the 340 cat engine in them. The dealer wants my boat plus 12.5k for the trade on the malibu. Does this seem like a decent deal? 600 hrs scares me a bit but if it passes a leakdown and compuression test is this something to worry about? What would you do if you were in my posistion?

i would not sell for for that big of a price... youre getting a boat thats been used 3x harder than yours for your boat plus 12.5k...

Did a quick peak at NADA, No options selected shows a six thousand dollar difference between the boats.

All things being equal.

NADA on the Supra

trade in average retail full retail
35,440 41650 47680

Malibu
41490 48780 55860

You can rest assured he didn't give more than trade in on the Malibu, so he is trying to sell it to you at average retail while offering you trade in. Personally, I wouldn't do it, but that is your decision. Maybe 6k, but not 12.

I would say you are crazy to do that.... If it was even money, I would still have a hard time trading 200hrs for 600hrs with no knowledge of how the boat was cared for.
Understand a dealer has to make money on both sides, so I see his logic, but I am not sure it is a good deal for you unless you are set on that boat and keeping it forever. 600 hours.....

600 hours isn't crazy by any means. But if you want a bigger boat, why not just sell yours outright and buy another boat. You will always get screwed over on trade in's - so why trade in?

600hrs may not be "a lot of hours", but once you buy it and put another 200 on it, you will have a hard time getting a good price out of it.

600 hours is not a crazy number if you knew that the boat was maintained and you were there for them, but regardless resale will take a beating. The general public will look at 600 hours like a ton. Typical boat buyers are still looking for that under 100 hour score. You and I know that is not always the best, but that is the way it is and it won't be many years until the boat has 1000 hours on it. Good luck finding a buyer for that.

Thanks everyone for your advice. Ill probably pass on this one then and look for something with lower hrs.

You could try and get the price lower. Just explain to them what your concerns are and lower the price to something worth your time. They are going to have the next guy come look with the same concerns you have, they might as well lower it now and get it out the door. I am looking at a boat in the next couple weeks with over 500 hours. That will be a negotiating point in my favor. Lower hours is great but if you factor in the cost of a new motor/trans into the deal in your favor, that should make sense.

no 600 hrs isn't crazy, working with a dealer is, you can get a malibu from a private seller for $8000 less and with 1/3 of the hours on it.
