So what was the ride like? How did it handle the chop? I'm curious to know what makes this boat so friggin expensive.
Old     (deltawake)      Join Date: Sep 2004       09-25-2009, 7:24 AM Reply
My question is WHY??? When by all accounts MC is barely getting by, why did they spend one dime developing a boat for a niche market that will probably only sell a handful of units. Just curious.
Old     (burtonrider_77)      Join Date: Aug 2006       09-25-2009, 7:26 AM Reply
its ridiculous, it handles good. you can be at full speed and take the wheel spin it and it turns. hold speed and everything. seems to do good in the chopy water they were out there at the gate during the afternoon when it was chopy. no complaints...

pete, from what i heard they have already sold 4 of them and there are a few dealers in the states that wanted hull #1. they are in a small market but i think that big boat owners will gravitate to this because it has so many unique options and its styling...
Old     (snowboardcorey)      Join Date: Jan 2004       09-25-2009, 7:45 AM Reply
I've heard they are up to 7 sold now, with an expected 12 per year production rate.

Plus, didn't they start teasing this boat nearly a year ago? I would imagine it had been in development for quite some time and when the idea first came up, things probably looked a lot better for Mastercraft and the boating industry as a whole. It just so happened that the economy tanked right before it was supposed to be released; they probably figured they might as well go ahead and put it out and hope for the best rather than shelve or delay the whole project and eat the costs.

you know more dollars than cents
Old     (psudy)      Join Date: Dec 2003       09-25-2009, 8:36 AM Reply
I would think the Dubai market would be into a little bigger boats than that. Maybe its their new dingy boat.

The price tag on those is astronomical compared to other boats of its size. I would think the front end configuration wouldn't be as pratical as a conventional Deep V out on the ocean.

Checked one out last weekend, Mastercraft Seattle had it out in Kirkland. It's a pretty sweet boat, but I also had the same thought: wondering why it costs so much. The one that is touring around (pictured above) has a sticker of 450k!!!

"Friends Dont Let Friends Wakesurf, unless they're behind a Mastercraft 300." Ha, ha, ha....

Of course it always begs the question.... If you're wakesurfing in the bay behind a 300, then why not just find a nice break and go surfing for real?

I think it's a cool boat, but dollar for dollar there are other boats out there that I would buy first. Of course, once you get into that price range there's always someone that will want to be original and have something different. That's what this boat will cater to. It'd be really fun to have one out on the delta for a weekend getaway. It'd be even better if you could actually wakeboard behind it.

For 450k you can get a real boat from a manufacturer who knows how to build a yacht.

No, but I am not going to take a chance on an extremely overpriced sunseeker wanna be. I would like to see the person who buys one of those for 300k+. That boat is worth less than 150k the second the papers are signed.

Brett-

The problem with your comparison is that your comparing two used boats to a brand new boat. And of course as soon as the paper are signed and the boat leaves the lot it will depreciate. That is how everything is.

We have to remember a $300,000 sticker price is just a sticker price. Our x-star had a sticker price of over $100,000 and we paid way less than that.
Old     (ericlee)      Join Date: Apr 2007       09-25-2009, 11:09 AM Reply
That 460 that Brett listed is WAY overpriced. My buddy got a 550 same year for less than that. I must saw it is an unreal looking boat but at only 30 ft or so I can justify spending that money. I guess if your buuying this boat your not worried about the price so who cares if it is over priced.
Old     (polarbill)      Join Date: Jun 2003       09-25-2009, 11:17 AM Reply
I just think that for the price that boat is so f'ing overpriced it isn't even funny and in my opinion there are a ton of better options. That is basically a pimped out day boat.
Old     (snowboardcorey)      Join Date: Jan 2004       09-25-2009, 11:24 AM Reply
MC made this boat to be a pimped out day boat, there are already a couple guys building entry and mid level 30'ers, they wanted to be a high end 30'er.
Old     (psudy)      Join Date: Dec 2003       09-25-2009, 11:43 AM Reply
You can get a high end Cobalt for less than 300K.
Old     (alindquist)      Join Date: Mar 2004       09-25-2009, 11:48 AM Reply
I think at $450K you can get a brand new Formula 370SS or maybe even a 400SS... Both are sweet boats made buy a company that knows how to build these kinds of boats (probably better powered and better optioned too). Does the Mastercraft have a gen-set? What kind of power? I'm sure the Mastercraft is nice but it will be interesting to see how long they build them. I think in the late 80's or early 90's Mastercraft made 24' cuddy that lasted all of one year (maybe two). I like Mastercrafts, I'm sure this is a nice boat but it does seem a little over priced for a 30' boat, even new...

Its been my experience that Formulas are pretty bare boned boats though. I am sure this is a little more lux.

if you watch the video on MC's 300 website you'll get the explanation for where the boat came from and who its target market is.

It's basically a boat for the world market, yes there is water outside of the US, and it's target market is the people who are looking to step down from their 40'+ yacht and into something more agile but at the same time big and luxurious.

i say it's a super sick boat. i was up on the sac river last week and saw nothing but similiar boats (Sea Rays) docked up to the bar. The thing ab them all is they all looked identical. I would imagine that if a 300 rolled up it would really draw some eyes and that's the point of it...i think..

Does the 300 have a rear sleeping berth or just the front v berth?

Just in the front berth

If Bret's point was that one is taking a big risk by buying the first year of anything, especially a $400k boat, I understand. Cobalts are one of the best made boats, prob the best round about. But they too recently started building yatchs and they have a good amount of problems. I have brought first year model boats before and they never have all the kinks worked out until a few years of making them.
Old     (polarbill)      Join Date: Jun 2003       09-25-2009, 2:47 PM Reply
I know the Searay's are not as fancy but most of them above 30' are going to have room to sleep 4, which in my book makes it much more usable. You might actually be able to take a cruise farther than 20 miles and sleep on it.
Old     (alindquist)      Join Date: Mar 2004       09-25-2009, 3:13 PM Reply
New Formulas are sweet, nice wood grain down below, teak floors, mid-cabin, hard tops, etc. take a look. I'm sure they offer the same options as the 300, probably more. That being said, does the $450K 300 have a gen-set and AC? What kind of power?
Old     (kko13)      Join Date: Jul 2006       09-25-2009, 5:14 PM Reply
Sorry IMPO over priced and over rated. So many boats that would kill that boat at that price range. Its really about having more money than sense when buying this boat. But god bless them if it was not for the filthy rich us little guys would not be around.

Without a good gen-set,ac,water tanks, living quaters its just a 300 thousand dollar run about. What does the boat really have?$300,000 dollar portapotty?

Brett doesn't know about first year boats cuz he hasn't had his first boat. Yet he is an expert.
SeaRay is a Chevrolet compared to MC. The 300 is being pushed over seas quite a bit as a day yacht.

Billy, I have had 3 of my own boats and my dad has had an 83 and 84 MC. I have never owned a brand new boat, but then again I would never buy a brand new boat unless I had so much money I just didn't care.

I am just saying this boat is really high priced for the size and for a first attempt at a yacht. Also, who is going to work on this boat. Mastercraft dealers sure as hell won't have the first clue on how to work on these things. If you look at the pic you can see optima batteries. No yacht builder in their right mind would use optima's in a yacht. Just a small sign they haven't figured it out yet.

I hope they don't make dealers put one in stock. It is going to help make the dealers go out of business because of added flooring costs. Darren up here in Seattle might actually have a have a shot at selling one because of the money up here, the lakes and Puget Sound but I still don't think I would want one in stock. Where the hell do the dealers store these? Do they have to lease slips on the water?
Old     (snowboardcorey)      Join Date: Jan 2004       09-26-2009, 10:50 AM Reply
Alot of speculation being thrown around here. You can check out the options on mastercraft.com but to answer a couple of questions

yes it has a/c and heat, you can get two units, one for the cabin and one for the cockpit

standard power is twin MCX 5.7 liter gas engines, 400 gas and cummins diesels are available too

You can get bow thrusters and/or joystick docking control which syncs both engines and the bow thruster

you can get satelite tv, sirius weather and radar on this boat

You can get a generator, stainless steel water heater, grill, fridge, C80 or E80 nav, choice of wood cabinets (not laminate), etc.
Pricing is from about 250-450K.
Old     (dlamont)      Join Date: Apr 2003       09-26-2009, 1:07 PM Reply
Brett,
I doubt any dealers will be stocking the 300 because they are 100% custom. That is another big selling point is this is the only 30ft you can totally customize. MC is flying in 300 customers to the factory so they can spec it out how they want. I have been on a few 30ft - 40ft boats and nothing compares to this boat, but nothing is $450K either.
Old     (alindquist)      Join Date: Mar 2004       09-26-2009, 1:29 PM Reply
Thank you Cory. 5.7's seem way to small, 496's or 8.1 at a min. Can you get Volvo pod drives? If the generator is optional how are they running the AC?
Old     (snowboardcorey)      Join Date: Jan 2004       09-26-2009, 1:59 PM Reply
Right now no pod drives, the boat has prop tunnels so I think they are planning on keeping it a twin V drive but I don't know that for a fact. I would doubt not many of these get built with the 5.7's, most likely 6.0 and diesels are going to rule the market. There looked like quite a bit of room in the engine hatch, I'm not sure why they are not offering 496's in her, it didnt look like a space issue but perhaps it is, my guess is that more diesles are in the future.

The HVAC system is an option too, not sure how you could power it without a generator.

I got to demo this boat when it was in seattle. I was blown away at the surf wake, it was so big and powerful I had so much fun on it. The boats huuuge but it felt like it didnt have any more room in the main cabin than an x-star. I feel like they couldve made it a little more roomy rather than have all this crap like the counters with the TV's and stuff. Very comfortable but again not much walking space. I wouldve liked it a lot more if the main cabin just had traditional wrap around seating with a big floor in the middle with a striper pole . All together I was pretty impressed with it tho. Turned around very well to pick up down surfers. Handled great. Diesels arent to loud and it had a pretty decent hole shot. All in all I gice it a 7 outta 10.

Brett: The 67 Bertram uses.......optima blue tops, and you can't say that not a real yacht, 4000 hp, 67 feet, etc. As far as the Mastercraft goes I do think it's a bit over priced but so are most high end boats and I do think, especially with this economy it's gonna be a hard sell but people will buy it.

Yes in the world of Yachts SeaRay is like a Chevrolet compared to others. Nothing wrong with Chevy but SeaRay is no Bertram or Hatteras by any means. The 300 is expensive for sure, but they are selling them and that is all that matters. If the guy writing the check likes it thats what counts. The thing is SeaRay couldnt get 300k for a 30ft boat.
By the way go to a SeaRay dealer and I think you'll find plenty of Blue top Optimas.

I dig it. This is the cool thing about boats / yachts - it isn't all standard. Cars are boring. Boats are not.

It isn't all linar. Some people want a 30ft boat day cruiser that is awesome. They could afford a much larger boat, but they want a 30 footer.

Souldn't we all be cruising around in sail boat - no gas bill...

Hell no, I put 3000 lbs in my boat and burn gas like I am lighting money on fire.

Have you seen the Grady Whites with 3 350 hps outboards on the back?

To each their own..

I think MasterCraft is taking a risk... but back in the day - who would of thought someone would spend 100K on a ski/wakeboard boa??
